Columbia Class of 2020 RD Thread

@hershey2010 Crossing my fingers for both of us!
What’s your intended major?

@thetsaria Physics and probably astrophysics/astronomy. You?

@hershey2010 Wow, seriously?? I’m actually the same?? What!!!
There are SO few people into astrophysics. How did you become interested in it? I grew up in Houston near the space center.

Hi everyone. Just figured I’d introduce myself while we’re all here waiting. Poli sci in the college.

@whitespace Hey there! Is Columbia your first choice? What other schools did you apply to? Nice to meet you!

@thetsaria Nice to meet you too! Columbia is about my third choice (that feels really strange to say, it’s an amazing school!!) and I also applied to Harvard, Brown, Vanderbilt, UVA, Georgetown, and Northeastern (accepted EA).

@thetsaria I’m actually not sure how it started, I’ve just always been fascinated by it

@whitespace Nah, it’s not that strange, I would definitely consider Harvard, Yale, or Stanford, maybe Princeton above Columbia. Then again, it’s the NYC Ivy, so depending on a person’s interests that might trump the rest.
I’m insane, I applied to all the Ivy Leagues (Harvard deferred EA, Columbia accepted LL), Rice, Johns Hopkins, NYU, 4 UCs (so far accepted Irvine and San Diego), UVa (accepted EA), plus Canadian schools (McGill, UBC – accepted, UofT – haven’t heard back). I thought I was a really bad applicant and if I applied to as many top schools as possible, maybe one would take me, statistically. I was absolutely floored by my Columbia LL.

Sorry for the rambling. What’s your intended major?

Congrats on the likely letter! You sound like you have a lot going for you, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you heard back from many more with a yes.

Political science.

In a way, I’m actually leaning most toward Georgetown at the moment, because of their School of Foreign Service. But who knows, I’m trying not to have solid preferences before I get my decisions back, because there’s no point in getting excited about going somewhere that I don’t get admitted to. I’m fully expecting to get denied from Harvard, Columbia, and Brown. I’m hoping for a solid acceptance at Vandy and GU. UVA I have moved on from.

Thank you! Tbh, I think it’s because I’m URM (biracial Native + Caucasian). I’ve actually gotten myself really worked up wondering if I only got in because of my heritage. It almost feels like I’m not a ‘real’ candidate.

Georgetown is such an awesome school, and they do have incredible programs. You seem like you would do well wherever you go. And you never know, the admissions process is so random, maybe you’ll get an awesome surprise on Ivy Day. Best of luck!

@thetsaria Your background might have been a plus, but they wouldn’t have accepted you if they didn’t feel like you belong there. So don’t work yourself up about it - you deserve it as much as all the other accepted students.

Hi everyone. I got this e-mail from Columbia on March 2 and seems like I missed to see it. It starts like this:

Greetings from Columbia University! The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is considering your admissions application, and we have identified you as a potential candidate for the National Opportunity Program (NOP). Students being considered for admission through NOP must meet certain criteria in order to be deemed eligible. Admission to this program is highly selective and if admitted, not only do students join a vibrant community of scholars, but they also benefit from additional academic, personal and financial support.

I was wondering whether any one got a similar e-mail or whether its just generic to low-income students applying to Columbia. They later said that I would be contacted by a current student at Columbia.

I’m low-income and didn’t receive that, so it may be a good sign?

I initially thought it might have been a likely given that it arrived sometime during the “likelies” period. Its wording however did not have the word “I have been admitted” therefore I wouldn’t see it as a good sign. But once I get to know how many were notified of the same opportunity I may predict if its a good sign**

Well, good luck to you!

Congratulations, @cvickibe That sounds promising! For the rest of you in the low-income pool of applicants, please understand that NOP is only for students from New York.

@whitespace Thanks!

Thanks @Alamom although I seem not to see so much promise in the notification. I wish it were more specific. They said I should expect to hear from them soon. NOP is not just for New York students… its not resident specific as of their website.

If you click under requirements, it says “Residents of New York”. It’s a program run by the state.

In honor of being halfway through March, let’s liven up this thread! Why do you love Columbia?
