Columbia College vs. School of General Studies

Hi everybody,
Elwesan and eugeneor- congratulations. Really happy for you two.
Now the only thing I can do is to wait a little longer.

Elwesan- are you an international applicant? Do you live in the US?

Thanks,
Adam

Congrats to those who got in !!!

Hi adam, yes I am an International student and I live in Singapore.

Thanks all. :)

Hi elwesan,

Thanks a lot!

Congratulations again,

Adam

Hi, I just called GS and they told me that my application is still under review.

They also said that I should get my decision in the end of June (???).

Thatā€™s so lateā€¦

I applied for the International deadline of April 1st. My application was actually completed on March 22nd.

Did any of you got a same response? / What does this mean?

Why donā€™t they just send me a Yes/No/Waiting list decision?

thatā€™s kind odd, by giving you an approximate date of your decision. Or maybe they will sent out all the decisions by then? but the end of June, that is late. I applied by April 1st. and by the time they told me Iā€™m good to go (she said my application should be ready to be reviewed in the next two weeks or so. and this is April 7th when I was there she told me in person. so I really have no idea when exactly did they start reviewing my application.)

I am still waiting as well I live in NY, and every morning I wish there will be a private no. calling my phone. but I guess I have to wait. Day after day.

I will call next week to see where am I , and if they will tell me the same thing they told you.

One thing I did ask them before is that there is no waiting list for GS, at least thatā€™s what she said when I called. So really it will either be yes or no.

letā€™s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

OMG, I am feared even to imagine that my decision could come later than mid-June. There is a government sponsiored scholarship program and the deadile is 15 of June. What shall I do if they do not tell me an answer by then? When I called a few weeks ago I was told it would be late May or early June. That is NOT a good idea to call them and ask to notify me by mid June coz of the situation, is it?

Thanks. PLZ tell me smth. I am so damned panicing nowā€¦

Hi zhaozhao, I gave the lady I talked to my name and she looked up my profile in her computer. I donā€™t think the date she told me is relevant toall other applicants.

Itā€™s hard for me to believe that GSā€™s deadline for sending decisions is Late June. Itā€™s just too late.

Because my application was completed on March 22nd I actually think that I am on a
waiting list. That is maybe the reason why they donā€™t send me a waiting list decision-
(because itā€™s doesnā€™t exits)- so now they are waiting to see what will happen and by the
end of June they will know if there is a spot for me. It seems like the most reasonable caseā€¦

I just donā€™t see any other possible option/reason to why I would only be notified in late
June.

In any case itā€™s not a good sign.

I understand Adam.
I am thinking the same thing. I would call on Monday and see what they will tell me.
the last time I checked my application is still under review.
I have this number, and she is the senior admission manager. I think I will call her and maybe she will give me an answer.

Just donā€™t give up yet. I know a guy who applied for ED and got the acceptance right around the decision deadline.

Maybe I am just being optimistic but I really wish this is not a bad sign.

Hey zhaozhao,

Thanks a lot, I appreciate itā€¦

Never giving up but I am thinking reasonably :)ā€¦
The time that GS said they would notify applicants was within 4-6 weeks.
Late June makes it almost 12 weeks. Moreover, I think that their deadline for notifying applicants is much sooner than late June.

Again thanks you for your optimism and I hope you will have some better news!

Looking forward for your updates

Adam

My application is currently under review! OMG, at last!!! What do you think ppl, how much does it take to make decisions? a week, ten days or more or less???

Hi. How are you?
They also told me that itā€™s still under reviewā€¦ And said I will get a decision in the end of Juneā€¦ So it might be soon and might be lateā€¦

I expto them i needed an answer by june 15 to apply for financial aid an dthey told me since my appl. is currently under review, there should be no problem of getting an answer to me by then. I just wanna know how soon? Like in a week maybe or 13 or 14 of June? :(

Hi, I donā€™t think anyone can tell you a specific waiting timeā€¦
Only admission office will be able to tell you
If they promised you that it will arrive before June 15th I believe it will be ok. I think you should just make sure a week before with them that you will actually get a decision by the 15th.

Iā€™m an international student and I just got the acceptance phone call!
I submitted my application by April 1st but due to some delay with my application documents, my application didnā€™t get reviewed till beginning of May.
I think the time frame is different for everyone but theyā€™re starting to make their decisions so be patient :)

Right now Iā€™m debating btw GS and USCā€™s business program.
I live in LA now, but I want to pursue my career in NY, so Iā€™m leaning towards GS as for now but I only have 2 days to make this decision.

Hope everyone gets good news soon!

Here is the comparison between UCLA and Columbia GS for finance career.

I think USC is far better than Columbia GS, which is an Extension School at Columbia .

GS is not an extension program, it is one of the three undergraduate schools at the University. It is only open to people that have a gap of at least one year between high school and college. Honestly it is kind of amazing to me that after 71 pages of this thread people are still calling GS the Extension School. Itā€™s not, this is: http://ce.columbia.edu/

I was accepted to USC and UCLA as a transfer, but Iā€™m choosing GS because I believe it is a better fit for me. However, GS does not have a Business major, so roxy, you may want to take that into account if thatā€™s your goal.

Thanks AMorrison

Iā€™m leaning more towards GS right now because Iā€™m a non-traditional student and I think Iā€™d do better in an environment with people like me.
Like you said, the only thing thatā€™s throwing me off is the major.

Are you already in GS or are you transferring in the fall?

Iā€™m transferring in the fall. Have you been given access to ā€œStorybookā€ yet? Itā€™s GSā€™s version of Facebook and thereā€™s a lot of information from past students on there that is really helpful.

Columbia GS began as Extension Teaching, and then it was renamed as ā€˜University Extensionā€™ and again renamed as General Studies.
