Columbia ED and Chicago EA?

As a practical matter, are there those who have applied to Columbia ED and Chicago EA? Columbia does not seem to prohibit this and I seem to recall people on CC doing this, although I did not find a thread specifically about it.

The thinking is that if Columbia is your first choice, but you also really like Chicago, you can find out in December where you stand with each. If you're in at Columbia--fantastic. If not, but you're in at Chicago, you can then decide whether to apply elsewhere or what few schools to add to the list. This allows for a very focused college application process.

Thoughts?

My friend did this. As long as you rescind your Chicago app if you're accepted ED, I don't think there are any problems with it.

Yeah, my friend did this too. Unfortunately he got deferred from both...

There's a few really prominent schools youcan do this with.

Specifically

Columbia ED + MIT EA + CalTech EA + Chicago EA

Make sure Columbia is your number 1 if you do get into all of them though or else you will be very miserable/regretful.

Could you do Brown ED + UChicago EA?

Read Chicago's policy too. I was going to apply to Georgetown EA and Columbia ED. Turns out that Columbia permitted it...but Georgetown did not permit applying early decision to any other school.

So may people do Chicago EA + Ivy ED it's not even funny.

Thanks for all of the feedback. We live in the southwest and some of the things that seem to be frequently done elsewhere are not as routine here. Students do not tend to apply both ED and EA when it is allowed. There is less ED/EA applying in general. Anyway, I appreciate the responses.

I know someone who turned down their ED school for their RD school for "financial" reasons.
