I think clevelc’s assumption is a perfectly reasonable one. If they want to limit it strictly to 500 words they should say so. Other schools (i.e. Cornell on their supplement) do. That being said I think all essays should be as concise as possible.

Mine is 719. Single spaced, it fits on one page and double spaced, two pages, so I’m assuming it’s fine.

It better be fine lol this is my most important application.

its fine, but hopefully your essay is more professional than your name =D

I have a friend who got in to columbia, and she said hers was two pages exactly, double spaced.

Mine is 567 words. I shorten it about 150 word already. I going to just send it the way is. They said 1-2 pages as well, and it is 1 and 3 quarter pages double space and size 12 font, so I’m assuming it’s fine.

Make that 569 words

Do you think 400 words is too short? I have one essay for the CommonApp that’s 627, and I can shorten that around 75 words for Columbia, or I have this 400 word essay for CommonApp supplements that would also work as a Columbia essay, but I’m worried that it might be too short. What do you guys think?

jsweden, 400 words is definitely NOT too short. The instruction calls for 250-500 words. I would think the admissions officer would appreciate a well-written essay that effectively conveys the message in 400 words. One of the skills your college writing teachers will pound into you is how to say more with fewer words.
