Hello, I'm going to be a senior next year. I have a few questions about the football team. I've always been interested in playing football, but I never got around to it.

1) How good is the team compared to a team like UCLA/Cal or a Big 10 school?
2) Is it remotely possible to walk-on as a wide receiver?
3) Does everyone have an equal opportunity to show his talents on the field at tryouts?
4) Is it either you're in or you're out, or do you have an opportunity to stay with the team and improve (this is provided that I show up to tryouts in excellent shape).

1). LOL
2). If you have 2 arms and 2 legs yes it's possible.
3). Refer to #1
4). It doesn't really matter: we'd lose anyway.

"While the Columbia Lions may be best known for a dismal recent history on the football field — as epitomized by the 44-game losing streak from 1983 to 1988, then a Division I-AA record — the Lions boast a rich athletic tradition. The wrestling team is the oldest in the nation, and the football team was the third to join intercollegiate play."

Incidently, Matthew Fox (Dr. Jack on ABC's Lost) was Columbia's quarterback when they finally broke a 44 game losing streak.

They recruited 31 kids this year (at least 3 WRs). I would contact the coach to see if walking on without prior approval from the coach is even possible. The walk ons that I know of are simply kids that the coaching staff did not feel they needed to support through admissions.

that losing streak ended in 1988, the team is still quite bad, but i think it is improving, i mean we did finish ahead of D and B in the ivy league 2006 :p... :'(

go watch "Rudy". Try not to make too many Hobbit jokes. Then answer for yourself whether you have that mental toughness and outlook. If you do, you can make it - but most people don't. All depends on your self-confidence.

so lemme get this straight....you have never played HS football and expect to be on a college team?

Yeah, that's why I'm doubtful. I'm sure pretty much all walk-ons have played. They just didn't get scholarships...I'm so ****ed. Why did I even ask this...

2) doesn't know the difference between Columbia Football and Ohio State / Michigan / USC Football;

yet thinks he has a prayer at playing football even at Columbia.

Maybe if you "didn't get around to" playing high school football because you were busy winning the CA State Championship in the 100 / 200 meters, you'd have a good shot at walking on. But I think not.
