I need help with college selection. I got a waiting list on Columbia Engineering, and accept by CMU. I got 530 on reading, 800 math, 680 writing, and three 800 on SAT 2 for math 2 chemistry and physics. I came to America on 2009 summer and barely did many extracurricular activities. So I'm really not sure what chance I have.... I want to study biomedical engineering and maybe pre-med in the future. I was told that I can write an email maximum one page to Columbia before May 1st. But I'm not sure which one should I choose and what should I write. I live in New York now so Columbia seems to be a better fit. but I heard that CMU's engineering is better on resources and so on. Actually I am on the waiting list for Barnard and Wesleyan too. They are not engineering school...but I can major in biology or chemistry there for pre-med... Should I stay on the waiting list? if I should, what should I write in the email? Please give me some advice..

Are you a man or a woman? Columbia engineering likes to recruit women because that is the only school in columbia where the ratio is nt 50:50 for boys and girls.

Pay your deposit at CMU since that is the only college that seems to have admitted you and keep your waitlist at Columbia if you are seriously interested in engineering. Waitlists may not clear until June or July and so you cant give up your only admission based on a waitlist.

If you are allowed only one page email to support your case - think deep and hard and write about why BME at Columbia will lead you to a medical profession. Emphasize the opportunities in research and internships Columbia provides that will help you make an impact on humanity. Do some research on the current research at Columbia and discuss something that interests you. Columbia engineering emphasizes trying to solve world’s problems and invent things for the greater good of humanity. If you can tie that into your own dreams and ambitions about becoming a doctor and serving the people, it might be a good essay.

^^^Very sound advice. I whole-heartedly second the above opinion :)

thanks for the advice…but I get a new problem now…
I just got an offer from GIT…and I have to make the decision by the end of May6…
does GIT has a better medical/BME progrm than CMU???
and yes I am a girl.

Did you already pay the deposit to CMU? If you already paid it, you are expected to withdraw from there if you now join Georgia Tech.

I am not sure about where CMU or Columbia stand for BME since I cant find any rankings for them. However, Georgia Tech is number 3 in the list after Johns Hopkins and Duke. For overall college rankings, Columbia is 4, CMU is 23 and Georgia Tech is 35.

So it depends on whether you want to worry about college rankings or department rankings.

I heard that a bunch of kids are getting off the Columbia waitlist for Fu.

^ Yes. my brother got off too :)
