Columbia grad school

So i'm currently a sophomore at lafayette college and i'm interested on columbia for graduate school in the future. i'm an economics major with a 3.45 GPA currently and i'm getting all A's and B's this semester as well. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what i can do to better the chances of my acceptance? I know it's a long shot since i'm not coming from an ivy league school but i REALLY want this...THANKS!!! :)

what grad school?
there are a lot of grad programs at columbia.

You need to get that GPA up significantly, but it depends on what program you are looking at.

the business school, probably for either marketing, accounting or maybe investments or corporate finance

yeah you are going to need a 3.8 and higher with high GMAT scores.

It was my understanding that most business school students take a break between undergrad and MBA to work. I get lunch at Columbia’s B-school sometimes, and the students look to be in late 20s or 30s.

yeah i know, but what you do in college is still important so i just wanted to do all i can while i’m still here!

GPA is one of the important factors that are taken into consideration, but one certainly doesn’t need a 3.8.

Work experience still trumps all.

This is a pretty naive post for a rising college junior. You should really know the difference between amorphous “grad school” and “business school,” that you need work experience for business school, etc.

Also, “getting all A’s and B’s this semester” means nothing. 5 A’s and 1 B is different than 5 B’s and 1 A. And you aren’t “getting” grades b/c you haven’t taken finals, etc.

Wow, I’m actually baffled at how rude and condescending your post is. Naive? I think you looked a little too much into my post. Who said I didn’t know the difference? I actually do, but am I not allowed to wonder what GPA I should be aiming for while I’m at an undergraduate school?

Also, by “getting” I meant all my exams, papers, etc. so far which is an indicator of my “final” grade. Apparently from your username I’d guess you attended Columbia, and I certainly hope you are not this pompous and condescending to everyone you encounter.

^One’s patience runs thin after reading and responding to so many poorly thought out questions. It eventually gets mind-boggling.

It’s an anonymous website. Sorry that I didn’t put enough time into my word choice for you. I feel bad for you if you feel you constantly have to prove your intelligence. I guess I’m confident enough in my ability that I don’t feel the same.

YC, you are missing the point, don’t get defensive. As you said, this is an anonymous website, don’t let people rattle your cage. The point kwu was trying to make is questions like these get asked ALL the time, so long time posters can get a little annoyed by it. Does that justify rudeness? No, but lets all just take a deep breath and use the search function some more :)
