@TheholyAx Yeah, remote planning session is online. I’m from California and registered for it too and it’s online.
I thought one has to officially accept and pay the 500$ deposit before being allowed to schedule an academic planning session ? But then on the other hand I didn’t do that and was able to already apply for housing ?
I’m attending the remote financial aid workshop on the 8th, but it’s no academic planning session.
@jennysong May 9th is indeed remote, did you maybe mean to sign up for the financial aid workshop as well? One has two options: either attend a GS Planning Day that includes a Financial Aid Workshop and Financial Aid Planning Session in person, or attend both separately on different dates and remote.
@brettm17 love the Facebook group idea!! ?
Does anyone else have to have their SAT, even though they got accepted? The SAT I submitted were NOT official since they are 10 years old, but I was told by administrators it was fine. But I still have to take it even with the acceptance to the school ): whats worse the next SAT are in June 1… Anyone else going through the same dilemma
Also for the “remote academic planning session” it check marked off one of the requirements for registration, so I guess it counts? I’ll go to both sessions, the online and tour
@jennysong you mean the admission officer wants you to retake sat and send your score again because it is not official?
@jennysong I think you may be misinterpreting some things. Did you speak with someone from Columbia that explicitly told you you would need to take another SAT exam? An official score remain official regardless of if the test was taken 10 days ago or 10 years ago; whether the score is accepted for admissions consideration due how much time has passed is up to the Univiersity you are applying to. In this case, eligibility of your score for admissions consideration is not a problem since Columbia accepts it.
You should be able to have an official score sent despite the exam being taken 10 years ago. I myself submitted official 11 year old SAT scores on my application. You can make the request and pay for official scores to be sent online via Collegeboard’s website, even for exams taken long ago.
This situation is probably similar submitting unofficial copies of a transcript with an application; the admissions panel will admit you based on unofficial documents, but expects that you eventually submit official documents corroborating the unofficial ones they used to consider you. It is likely that all they would like to see from you is an official SAT score report that matches the scores you entered manually on the portal during your application process. I would definetely get in touch with the admissions office and check with them to identify exactly what it is that they need from you before registering to take another SAT exam.
@jennysong I believe @Kamber is right, they probably only want official test scores, meaning that your scores from 10 years ago are sent to them by College Board (who administer the test). It wouldn’t make sense to me if you‘d actually have to re-take it. Please contact the admissions office.
Also according to the website, you‘re only allowed to either attend the remote online session for academic advising or the GS planning day (offline). Unfortunately it specifically says that you cannot attend both. Why don‘t you go in person then? If you can, I bet that‘s a much cooler experience than remote.
anyone creating the facebook pages?
I did have college board send my SAT score directly to the school…but when I go to the acceptance letter and click on the link(in the acceptance letter) and get redirected to the “require actions menu” and click on the “missing credential”, it states “Awaiting Official SAT” even tho I had collegeboard directly send my scores…I did send rush reporting? Maybe that’s why? I’ll have to email or call on Monday to confirm
Oh my god! I can not believe I was accepted as well! I found out on the 1st too but it’s still taking time to fully sink in.
Including stats as well if it’s helpful:
- 3.0 in HS
- 1.9 at Vanderbilt (it’s complicated) went on piano scholarship, wasn’t prepared for the academic side in so many ways....
- Took a break to work in a bar and save up
- 3.8 at Western CT State University (part time)
- 3.7 at Baruch (part time, non-degree student)
- 3.86 at BMCC (full time, current student)
SAT (over 10 years old) was 1440

Story: Left CT after coming out to parents didn’t go well, moved to NYC 3 years ago, worked 3 jobs while living out of my car, saved up enough and proved enough income between the 3 jobs to sign my own lease in Manhattan and attend college, currently work full-time at 1 job (40 hrs/wk) and go to BMCC full-time (15 credits)
I’m absolutely honored and humbled to be in the company of so many of you who’ve accomplished so much, and have served your country. It’s amazing to read everyone’s story, and I think it’s a huge part of what sets GS apart. It’s also a testament to the idea that persistence can still pay off, even when the system seems so tilted against those who made mistakes at their first college or in HS.
I really can’t believe I got in- I’m still in total shock. I fully believe that my essay was my main selling point, because I spent more time working on that than anything else. I also attached my resume, and got a letter of rec from my boss, to prove that I really did work full-time while going to school full-time, and to speak to how I balanced the hectic schedule without negatively impacting my work. 2nd rec letter came from my economics professor, since that was my anticipated Major wherever I transferred in Fall.
I wish the best of luck to everyone still waiting to hear back! My advice would be to just believe in yourself and own your story. I really think they care about the essay the most. If all they cared about was your past grades, or past failures, there would be no point to GS. I really think they care more about what you learned from your failures, that you owned them, and that you were able to set new goals for yourself and demonstrate a commitment to a new trajectory at your current school. Good luck!
@InwoodNYC congratulations!!
Reading the many stories here about how each us of has found their way to Columbia GS is truly inspiring and I’m already looking forward to meeting all these interesting individuals in fall
I guess that was a no to the facebook page lol
@Punisher1, I was going to make one but I saw that there were “official groups” for previous admission years. I was going to check with the admissions office on Friday and see if they are indeed planning on creating an “official” group for us, but I got bogged down with work. I’ll make a call over on Monday.
Is anyone planning to defer for a semester?
I’m debating it.
I had a friend who deferred for 2 semester so she could complete her degree and she was able to transfer some of her credits she earned, even tho on the Columbia GS website states otherwise. She was a theater major if it makes any difference…I’m a semester away from getting my associates so I’m strongly considering to defer til spring ):
@jennysong Yet to be accepted (but my fingers and toes are doubly crossed) and I am in the same position as you. If you reach out to GS and they tell you that its possible to defer in order to complete a final semester for an assosciate’s, let me know!
@mamabear336 yes you can defer in order to take classes, but it’s not advised because those credits might not transfer.
I created a Facebook Group! It’s called Columbia GS Fall 2019-Spring 2020 Admitted Students. I tried to post a link on here but it got flagged.
@brettm17 Great! I will look it up
