Hello. I am applying as a transfer student to Columbia GS for Fall 2013.

I am Ukrainian citizen and went to college in Europe. Currently I am a student at Baruch College ( CUNY ), however, I am looking for more challenging and competitive environment. I maintained 3.5 GPA while working full time and interning. I work as a business analyst, but I've also completed internships at the UN and the Consulate General of Ukraine in NY.

What are my chances to get to Columbia GS?

Any tips on autobiographical essay ? I would really appreciate your advice on admission.

Thank you in advance !!

Hi there! The main requirement you must satisfy in order to qualify for GS is to have a gap in your education of at least one year. If you have that gap, you should definitely apply. The main thing I would suggest for the essay is what they already outline in their prompt: Address why you are a non-traditional student and how Columbia can help you get where you want to get. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi. Thank you.

I have a gap of 4 years as I had to work after moving to the US. I’m just worried that a GPA of 3.5 night be an issue.

Hope to see you at GS this fall :)

@Columbia0830 I want to add to what denbal87 has already stated. At one time I questioned my credentials as well. However, if you do have that gap and a compelling story (which it sounds like you do) I think it is worth applying. Goodluck

@I8myapplication Thank you, I applied on May 28th, and had to take TOEFL few days ago, even though I have GED certificate. I have no idea if I scored well enough. This waiting is killing me :(

I hope you work things out and will be able to attend CU this Fall, looks like you had to overcome many challenges and I’m sure you will overcome this one as well!!

Good Luck!!

Stop with the “wait killing”. If we get in we go, if not we go to cuny another year, or whatever, and apply next year. Big deal. More credits to transfer:)
I don’t mean to be crass but seriously the emotional roller coaster is not beneficial. My friend who is in for a year, was extremely anxious while waiting, EXTREMELY exited first semester or 2, and then hit reality in the second half of second semester. Getting in, just means that studying 8 hours a day, you will do well. Nothing to go manic about. I mean definitely a wonderful opportunity, but an opportunity is all that it is.

I am looking to attend college for my first time. I graduated high school in 1997, and have never attended any courses for college credits. I have had a pretty successful professional life, working in upper management in manufacturing and in high volume restaurants here in Manhattan.
I plan on first starting off at the Borough of Manhattan Community College this Spring to get my feet wet in higher education, and attend through summer full time all the while. I then intend on transferring into the best school I can be accepted at, saying this, will me going to a college then directly applying to CUGS disqualify me? Or does is the one year break already “served” by me taking 16 years off after high school?
Thanks for your time!
