Hi everybody!
I'm currently attending university in Italy but I'm considering the idea of applying to Columbia School of General Studies. After graduating from high school, I decided to attend the school of law( which is an undergraduate program here in Italy) but then I realized that I didn't like it at all so I decided to make a radical change and I'm currently attending the first year of the Bachelor in International Economics. After the Fall Semester, I decided to apply to Columbia as a Transfer Student in order to transfer some credits from the exams I've already taken here in Italy. My main concern is that my GPA is not very high (it's around 2.85) and this is because I went through a very bad period during the last two years. On the other hand, my High School grades were excellent. Do you think I still have any chance to get into Columbia GS? I was told that a good essay might offset a Gpa which is not very brilliant.
Thanks in advance

Hi giuli89.

I am also an international transfer trying to get into Columbia GS. Although I graduated from high school in the US, I am currently studying at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. I’ve been here two years, and I’m miserable.

I can’t offer much advice on admissions (and would certainly welcome any) but I do want to let you know that in order to qualify for GS, you need to be nontraditional in the sense that you have taken at least one year off in your education. Otherwise, I think you need to apply to Columbia College rather than GS.

Otherwise, I’ve heard from several people who overcame bad high school GPAs to get in, so possibly the same applies for college?

I’m curious, have you head anything about how international credits transfer? It’s obviously a completely different system (three classes a semester is standard here) so I’m wondering how that all works.

I don’t know much about the international aspect, but I do know that they consider college GPA more than high school grades/ test scores. You may want to take some time to bring up your GPA before applying to a school like Columbia.

Actually, I’m attending a very challenging school in Italy( probably the best one if you want to graduate in Economics) and it’s kinda difficult to mantain a high GPA. Do you think that the admission committee is giong to take this fact into consideration? According to my experience, no matter how hard you try, it’s impossible to get A in your exams. It’s a very selective school, not to mention that I had to take a quite challenging test in order to be admitted.
I really hope that the grades I got when I was in high school will be taken into consideration.

did you get into the school anyway?
