Columbia Hall was recommended as a fun place to live the typical freshman experience. As a business major, seems so far from D. Moore building- on Maps says a 20 min walk. Is this true and does anyone know if that would be a bad decision? I assume as a freshman you have at least one class in the B School building but I am not sure. Maybe East Quad (L and Learn Comm for business) would be better, but that suite style with individual bedrooms (tiny) may be strange. Opinions welcome.
It’s not too far to walk. Really they only gave us 15 minutes between class back in the day (and even when D started in 2011) and it was possible to walk from Pickens St. Bridge area to old J school (under coliseum beside Darla Moore). When my D there, the biggest problem was if you had back to back classes from say engineering to Math. That was hard but professors are understanding if that’s why you slide in at last minute. Actually in 4 years D was there, she very seldom had back to back classes - more spread out. Also, some business overflow classes still meet in old BA - close to where Columbia Hall is and other general classes you might take such as English, History, Language, Math, social sciences, etc are in core of campus between Columbia Hall and Russell House. Sciences a bit further as are engineering and music. You won’t be living in CH by the time you have a full schedule of business classes at DM.
So you might have a time or two when you have to hustle to get from one place to another. I wouldn’t keep it from living at that end of campus. As a parent, I’m a fan of the freshman experience where you have more traditional suites and halls and not apartments.
But yes it’s a big campus and it’ll take you 20 minutes to walk cross campus to do almost anything.
@scmom12 That’s great information, I really appreciate it. Nothing like hearing it straight from someone who’s lived it and also going thru it again with kid! thank you
My son loved Columbia Hall back in 2012-2013.
