I am from LA, originally, and one of my students just got accepted to Columbia University for the class of 2009, which has made me spend more time here on this Columbia board.

The major vibe (impression) I am getting from the posters and the aura of threads here: (I am not saying that this is good or bad, since a negative trait can be positive on the flip side and vice-versa)

Columbia students (and soon-to-be-students, therein) are defintely more cynical than the posters on the other threads.

Columbia students exhibit strong self-confidence, but at the same time, a certain degree of unnecessary swagger and attitude.

Columbia students are less “clanish” than others. They seem to like to enjoy their own moments far more than other students.

Columbia students are no non-sense type of people.

Am I right on this observation? Or am I concluding too much based on too few samples of subjects and observations?

Hmmm...
I think you are definitely over-generalizing. But yes, there must be some truth in what you are saying.

As with any school or with any large group of people, it is hardly right to narrow it down and underpin them with 4 specific traits.... It is a diverse group and I'm sure every one of the students are unique in their own way.
Perhaps a few posters on this board came across like this, but I don't think those traits are necessarily all true, and apply to everyone.

There will definitely be the cynics, but that doesn't mean everyone is one, even in the slightest bit.
I do think that the majority of students at a school like Columbia will exhibit strong self-confidence, but I don't know about the unnecessary swagger and attitude... again, true to some extent??
And I'm sure there will be a fair amount of people who are very independent.. but there will also be the more "clanish" types.

So, basically, you're right and wrong? Haha.

cynical, yes, but the best kind, with a humor and actually the opposite of your observation...they really dont take themselves too seriously...their ideas, intelliegence, potential, yes, but its mostly justified
