Social Atmosphere at Columbia

I've heard from a few people recently that Columbia's student body tends to be very elitist and stuck-up. However, I really would like to NOT believe this... Could anyone tell me about the student body a little more from personal experience so I can form a more balanced opinion? Thanks so much.

It’s quite the opposite, read some posts on here. For any school of our caliber, columbia is one of the most un-stuck-up places. Our students are known to not take themselves too seriously. I don’t and it works to my advantage on campus.

Nope. I interact with the undergraduates quite a bit and it is SO easy to forget that Columbia is an Ivy League school. Students never mention it unless you bring it up, and they are so laid-back and friendly! I love the undergrads here, they’re so very humble and friendly (from all schools – not just CC, but most of the graduate schools as well) and yet so brilliant and accomplished.

I’ve found quite the opposite effect at many other Ivies (particularly Harvard – Harvard students don’t like for you to forget that they go to Harvard.)

It’s a great place to be, Columbia.

Thanks, guys. That’s a huge relief.

Check this out, its got a lot of good threads on Columbia’s atmosphere: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-university/347790-helpful-columbia-threads.html

Branyon, whoever told you that lied. Although, in a class of 1200 undergrads, you’ll find a handful of the stuck up ones–but that would be true everywhere. It usually takes a hard class or a professor or a smarter, nicer student to get their heads out of their asses.

that being said, I loved the social life at columbia. I loved how hanging out downtown was an option, not an obligation, how I could hang out in someone’s room late into the night talking about everything under the sun, and how in the immediate vicinity of the campus, i could always run into someone I knew. Most importantly, I loved how work hard, play hard it is. Just like NYC <3
