Columbia ISERP HS Internship

how competitive is it exactly?

Sephora2: I’m not exactly sure how big the applicant pool is. From the relatively small amounts of people that look for threads (such as this one), the fact that the applicants are limited to only high school juniors and those that can commute, and the obscurity of the program (it’s not really advertised), I wouldn’t say that there’s an extremely large amount that apply. However, the program did say that they usually take in about 4-6 interns a year (last year they took in 10) and judging by the multiple rounds that are needed to determine whether to accept a student, I would say that the applicant would still need to be well qualified for the position.

@paperdollie: any idea what the interview is like? I got an interview e-mail too…

haha, no clue! I’m guessing that if they’re interested in us, we just make sure we can explain the accomplishments/merits we put on our resumes thoroughly. From the advice i’ve received from my friends that have applied to similar science programs that require interviews: think about all the possible questions they could ask you, including odd questions (you never know). Obviously, stress why you fit into the program as well.

I wonder if all the interviewees are being interviewed on the same day. Karate96, is your interview this friday?

I had mine y’day. Seemed quite relaxed…we went over my resume…that’s it. i think it went well… but it was my first interview ever.- so I dunno! Keeping my fingers crossed. I really want to do this internship.

Did anyone end up doing the program last summer? I’m really interested in it for 2011 but the webpage doesn’t seem to be updated (yet?). I’d love to hear more about what exactly interns do on the program. Anyone? Thx!

+1 to all plannergrl and SriMuppidi.

Also - anyone know of any similar programs… anywhere? (Meaning research based humanities summer programs/internships; not TASP or the like.)

I might as well just revive this thread as others have done…

The application is due in a few days, and I was wondering if anyone knew what they were looking for in the “short writing sample”.

Thanks :)

I think they want something relevant to the internship field that you’ve written yourself. See [this article](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/18/AR2008101800711.html) for details.

I sent a page of a research paper I wrote for US History class. I sent in my application materials last week but it looks like I’ll have to wait 2-3 weeks to hear about an interview. Trying not to dwell on it…

I was thinking of doing that too, but I wasn’t sure if they wanted an excerpt…

Just sent my stuff in - my writing sample was a 2-page paper I wrote for English, since I haven’t written a solid research paper in a long time (thanks rushed AP classes…) Don’t really know how that’s going to play out, but I thought it was well-written.

In case you guys are wondering, the deadline has apparently been moved to the 7th? This might move all the dates up a little :</p>

Good luck to everyone!

Deadline extended; wonder if that means they are short candidates (or short what they think are GOOD candidates :cringe:).

Well I guess that’s good for me, since I haven’t applied yet ;)

hey, does anyone know if we would receive a confirmation email first, that they received our application? or is it only the email requesting an interview?

@mfd1023: You should receive an email confirming that they got your application. (I sent mine in on Thursday night, and had gotten a confirmation by Friday afternoon.) The interview emails probably won’t come out for a couple of weeks.

alrighty, thanks!

is this only for those who live near columbia?

Yes ^^^

You have to commute each day.

soo i don’t want to sound anxious and crazy, but i sent mine in friday and still haven’t gotten any confirmation email…do you think it would be rude if i sent it again or asked them if they received it?
