Columbia Likely Letters

I got one today!

@T26E4‌ You’re good. But maybe next time, you might want to reconsider your word choice and tone before you reply to somebody. It might sound unpleasant to them… Anyways, I got a likely letter last Wednesday along with a Science Research fellowship thingy today as well, so I’m in high spirit :slight_smile:

I got one too! I’m heavy in academics, as most of these appear to be. Very excited to get to know Columbia better. Also, interests went: Econ, Bio, CS.

After receiving my likely letter, I was informed of my likely designation as a Science Research Scholar a few days ago. Is anybody familiar with this particular scholar program at Columbia? Or Columbia scholar programs in general? Please PM me! Thanks.

@digony‌
Hey! Congrats! Are you thinking about going to the days on campus + scholar experience thing?

Also named a Science Research Fellow! Along with the email, I got a packet in the mail yesterday with a book and a personalized letter explaining why they chose me. I’m definitely going to the regular visit + science research visit event in mid-April.

@Ostinato1689‌ What was the book that was sent to you? I received a packet from Columbia two weeks after I received my likely letter, but didn’t look at the packet too much as I thought it was a packet sent to all students that received likely letters.

@Ostinato1689‌
Got the packet too!
I’m going as well - flying from China : )
What are your intended majors? Astrophysics/Physics for me.

OK, I’ll bite. What exactly was in the packet you guys got? I received a physical copy of my likely letter in the mail, but other than that, all I’ve gotten is various emails. Haven’t been nominated for any named scholarships (I’m not sure if I can be since I didn’t apply for financial aid), and I intended to major in a humanities area, so no Science Research Fellowship - did it specifically have to do with that?

Not worried, just curious :slight_smile:

Got one a few days ago! Haven’t received anything in the mail yet… are they mailing these letters too? or is it just through email? And when they say “midyear review” in the letter, are they talking about our mid year report with first semester grades from senior year? will they go call our school to go check on our second semester grades?

For me, they actually didn’t mail the likely letter but just the “likely scholar letter” and a personalized letter. I don’t think it has much to do with applying for FA or not since I myself didn’t. However, I think that many likely candidates should be able to get nominated for some sort of scholar (there are many other different types of them), possibly with the formal admission letter. So good luck everybody!

@ProximaCentauri‌ - wow!! I’m sure we’ll meet at the science visit day, then. I’m from Michigan, and I applied for 1) computer science, 2) economics, and 3) east Asian studies. I’m really looking forward to visiting campus!

@adrianmcafee15‌ - the book was Ignorance: How It Drives Science by Stuart Firestein.

@Tshiknn‌ - the packet included a hard copy of the same email notifying me of my acceptance to the Science Research Fellows program, a personalized letter explaining why they chose me, the book, a brochure on the program, and info on the admitted students’ days and booking travel. I think I saw elsewhere on CC that someone didn’t find out that they were a John Jay scholar until the regular admissions letter, even though they had gotten a likely letter earlier - so maybe you could still become a named scholar?!

Friend was nominated as a Science Research Scholar:

2400 SAT, USAMO qualifier, lots of Latin stuff, Siemens Finalist

I’m wondering the same thing as @collegeazsxdc‌ ! What do they mean by mid year report? I believe most of us sent these in way back in February, and I was told that they would be a factor in the decision-making process.

Nvm I actually just called the admission office to ask about this. Apparently we have to actually go around to our teachers, ask for our current marks, and then fax it over to them. Lol

@Ostinato1689‌
Cool! Can’t wait to meet you there! I’m international, so I’m flying from Hangzhou, China to the states : )
I applied for 1) Astrophysics 2) History 3) Literature
Just curious, but did you do UChicago too? My heart is for Columbia now but probably still going to visit UChicago. It’s so nice that domestic travel is covered!

@ProximaCentauri‌ I got into UChicago during the EA round! I think I’m going to do the 16-17 April overnights.

@FuzzyPeaches22‌
Ahhh, unlucky, I’m going to the 9-10 April round. What do you want to study?

@ProximaCentauri‌ Probably political science or something. What are you thinking about going into?

I received a likely letter about 3 weeks ago! Best day EVER :smiley:
