Columbia SEAS

I wish you the best of luck as well!

What's up with all these people dissing Columbia SEAS?! >:O

ED Fu acceptees unite!

By the way, UPenn engineering is ranked lower than Columbia. Not that ranking really matters, but that statement about Fu being inferior is just plain ignorant. Yea, go delfire!

Hey, don't diss.

We invented FM radio, split the atom, and uh...

Wouldn't they fall more under Physics?

what's the admission rate for RD seas again? is it around 20%?

Yea, it's about 20-25%...as opposed to ED which is around 50%...in defense of Columbia Fu again, UPenn and Cornell admission rates for their engineering schools is just about the same.

Engineering schools have higher rates due to self-selectivity.

20 - 25.. and everyone is good at math and sci.. pretty tough stilll...

Although SEAS might be "easier" to get in, I think that the SEAS curriculum is harder than the CC core...all of my engineer friends are much more stressed out than fellow Columbia College classmates (partly because SEAS engineers have so many more midterms and labs, etc.).

I have a question..

when people talk about oh, i go to Columbia.. don't they usually mean the college?? and isn't the seas given a complete different name like Fu school of Engineering or something?? and does it say Columbia on your degree or Fu school? it seems like two totally separate schools to me but with the same campus...

and i think the prestige of Columbia refers to the college, not the engineering school.

"when people talk about oh, i go to Columbia.. don't they usually mean the college?? "

It only usually means the college because there are more students in the college. SEAS is given a completely different name for the school, but it's still Columbia. The degree, I believe, for both college and Fu institute of engineering, says Columbia University. I'm not completely sure about that, but my friends that attend Fu say that. But the only people that really care about the name are prestige whores...

Bottom line...it's not the college that makes or breaks you, it's who you are. People that attend Fu are generally just as qualified as people that attend the College, which is why they have higher stats. While it IS "easier" to get into because of its acceptance rate, Columbia SEAS students are just as intellgent and hardworking, if not more.

I think Columbia Fu students have the same "bragging rights" as Columbia College students because they have to take many of the same courses and then also a lot harder ones that generally College people don't take. If you can hack it at Fu, you can hack it at College.

My friend that is a sophomore at Fu right now says that it is true that sometimes College students are a little condescending to Fu students, but there is no real feelings in it. It's just like making fun of your short friend for being short or something. Once they get there, they realize that everyone is basically in the same league. Especially after College kids realize that the reason they're not getting the A's in Calculus or Organic Chemistry is because of the ten engineering kids in the class ruining the curve...

but...Who really cares about prestige anyways?

Sometimes I feel the ivy league is just a creation of rich white society to make themselves feel better...

With that being said...

Columbia Seas '09!

Nicely said beachpanda and I couldn't agree more, but something else to address is:

When people ask you where you are going to college, and you say "Columbia" (And you went to its SEAS), do you not feel a bit uncomfortable when they act uber-shocked because Columbia College has close to 10% acceptance rate? And a part of you know that the awe displayed by the person is for THAT, and not SEAS?

I'm trying to figure out this complex, if anybody has any analytical comments, please share.

With that being said...

Columbia SEAS '09! =)

Yeah, I guess...but who's to say you wouldn't have gotten into College if you applied there...it is the same admissions committee, after all. ;)

Now we'll never know...so they can't really say anything.

Also, you can just give them the huge "short answer" I wrote earlier...

So Columbia is on spring break, and my other friend that goes to Fu visited me. He's a freshman. I asked about the whole College being better than SEAS thing, and he says that it's mostly just a joke...some ammo to use during dinner or trash talk in basketball and Texas Hold'em (as lame as it may seem). He says it's hard for College students to say they are "better" than SEAS students because they are so different. The thing is, it is almost a requirement of SEAS to be "smart" by society's standards, while the College students do not necessarily have to be as smart. It's also hard for College students to say anything bad because a lot of them need help with their homework and studying...(though they must have some AWESOME skill or knowledge in one area because they ARE going to CU, they may lack many talents needed for the required courses they take...like math) This argument can go the other way for SEAS students saying they are better than College students...

Personally, I kind of look forward to confronting this small stereotype against SEAS students, as it will motivate me to "prove myself" to the College students.

And when people are in awe of me...it's for me being the awesome guy I am...not where I'm going to college. :) Just kidding.

Actually, I think people are just impressed with Columbia University in general because of Columbia's accomplishments and history. It's funny how UPenn SEAS students don't have to deal with this problem of "prestige" that Columbia SEAS students have to deal with, even though they are in the same exact situiation of getting into the school that has an acceptance rate of ~25%, as opposed to 10%. Then again, a lot of people are too busy thinking UPenn is Penn State to even begin to wonder if someone could have gotten into UPenn College, as opposed to UPenn SEAS.

I'm kind of overly-defensive about Fu, just because I'm going there and when people are saying "Oh, that's not that impressive," it's kind of lessening the worth of my entire life's accomplishments thus far. I don't really care about prestige that much though, because having a small ego at times is what really motivates me to be a perfectionist. Maybe this kind of thinking of Fu is something that I really need to motivate myself...

I don't really care too much about what other people think, but I am a little worried about what employers and grad schools (especially med schools) think of Fu. I heard they basically ignore the distinction and may even consider the biomedical engineering B.S. attained at Fu, far more impressive than a biology bachleors attained at College.

um.. can anyone tell me what's avg. stat (perhaps SAT scores/ranking/GPA) of SEAS acceptees??

(gosh, to me 25% is SOOOOOOO low but you guys talk as if it's usual thing -0-)

i know! All these parents at my school are like "you guys have GREAT chances of getting into college. 15-20% is high for acceptance rates."

So I just look at them and say. "Fine then...80-85% DON'T get accepted"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? 25% OF PPL HAVE BELOW 1320!!!!!!!!! THAT'S INSANE

maybe they all had 1310s :D

Yeah, probably math geniuses with 800 mathcs and 500 verbals lol
