Columbia Supplement Book List

This question is for those who go to Columbia/are applying to Columbia

What type of books have you put on the supplement? Should it be classics, bestsellers, books that fit your interest, big books, small books, etc.

Also, around how many do you guys have? How many is a good amount?

I currently have around 4-5 books that are all about politics and economics, which are my top two choices of majors.

I think it should be a list of books you enjoyed most, not necessarily just books that pertain to your major… They also give you quite a lot of space to write so depending on how much you read both for school and for leisure, you may have more or less books. I put 5 books for the required readings, which will hopefully be pushed up to 6 or 7 by the time I send in the common app. I read quite a lot for leisure as well, so I put down 9 books.

I do feel though that if you put down too many books, it might appear that you are A. fudging it or B. don’t spend too much time thinking about each book… So I don’t think there is a prescribed “good amount”. If you read 5 books the whole year and enjoyed only those, then only put those down.

I also don’t think there is a specific “type” of book you need to include. They probably use this book list to see what you like and who you are, at a glance. So I repeat, put down the books that you liked the most.
