Decision: Accepted - CC

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 800 / 800 / 730 (on writing)
ACT (breakdown): -
SAT II: 800 on Math 2, 790 on BioM, 730 on Literature
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.87 (not too sure about this one)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Salutatorian
AP (place score in parenthesis): -
IB (place score in parenthesis): (results still pending, predicted for a 44/45)
Senior Year Course Load: 7 classes + IB CAS program
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Multiple subject awards, country doesn’t offer any national awards

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student Council (Representative, Secretary, President, Ex-Officio Adviser), MUN on an international level (Vice President), Global Issues Network member, Thespian Society (Vice President, Co-Founder), multiple other minor activities
Job/Work Experience: Marriott Hotel HR Assistant, Marketing Intern at multiple stores such as Pandora, Faro, Ant Hill, etc., Communications Intern at Naf Naf, Translator and Article Writer for ‘Clean City’ environmental company
Volunteer/Community service: Cared for mentally ill children at a Hospital for 2 years, Art Therapy at a special school for a year, founded a project (supported by our Ministry of Education) to promote awareness of the dangers of incest in my country, Grab-A-Bag activity (collected and sorted clothing to distribute to shelters).
Summer Activities: Internships listed above, Stanford Summer Institutes program ‘Courses in Psychology’
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10 - I showed my CA essay to just a few people, but those included a Dartmouth professor that commended me on the essay and had a few minor changes on a structural level. I’m particularly proud of the essay to be honest, as well as the Columbia specific essay (definitely more than many other essays I wrote for other Ivies and non-Ivies).
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 9 - My principal wrote my counselor’s rec as our counselor left mid-year, but I believe in his ability to write rec letters. My only concerns - hence the 9 - were about one of my professors who is a trite writer, though I did (unofficially) hear a snippet of his essay and it was quite impressive (even surprisingly so) how highly he thought of me.

Teacher Rec #1: 8, Psychology Professor

School Type: International, Private
Ethnicity: Azerbaijani

Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths: I’ll clearly bring a lot of new perspectives to the campus. I think what really set me apart was my long term involvement and accomplishments as the SC President, as I had created the first official constitution. My Healthy Future project was my biggest accomplishment, I think.
Weaknesses: May seem a little too strong, perhaps a little too energetic. They might see that as a minus, as I may come off as a slightly too powerful roommate, perhaps even overly competitive even though i don’t see that as one of my qualities. They may also think I’m too rebellious, as most of my application speaks of my rebellion against cultural norms in my nation.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because of my spirit, my passion for my subject, my one-of-a-kind project and overall enthusiasm
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far (no response from Ivies/Stanford yet) Cambridge, UCL, Glasgow, Bath, St. Andrews (in UK) and BU, UCLA, UCB, Barnard, Wellesley, Duke, some others I forgot in US, IE and John Cabot in Europe.

General Comments:
I’m open to questions if there are any and please forgive me if I messed any part of this up, I’m a new member!

Decision: Rejected - CC

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT (breakdown): superscored 33 (35 E, 33 M, 33 R, 32 S, 32 W) (highest composite: 32)
SAT II: N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 17/390
AP (place score in parenthesis): 3 Biology, 4 English Lang & Comp, 5 Music Theory
IB (place score in parenthesis): school didn’t offer IB
Senior Year Course Load: AP European History, AP Calculus AB, AP French 5, AP Chemistry, AP Lit and Comp, Civics, Gym, and choir
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): should these be national? I have multiple minor ones through the school, community, state piano competitions, church, and archery club but that’s as far as it goes.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): competitive piano, competitive club archery (assistant coach for Saturday morning practice sessions,) Camp Barnabas (counselor,) Desperation Conference (Sunday school group leader, youth pastor,) weekly volunteer at local hospital (member of Junior Volunteer Leadership Team,) volunteer and management for annual blood drive at Memorial Health System (board of directors,) fundraising for child leukemia patient through the school and local community (co-coordinator,) online author on fanfiction site (I write all-original works to target various things I find wrong with society or social issues like bullying and lack of self esteem.)

Job/Work Experience: internship with Random House over the summer, waitress/hostess, babysitting, tutoring, piano teacher
Volunteer/Community service: participated in 95% of all church coordinated events (youth group pianist and singer, dancer/singer/event planner for many performances, representative member of church volleyball team, monthly soup kitchen volunteer and singer for pre-dinner worship performances, monthly trailer park community volunteer/babysitter/Bible teacher, Black Forest fire aftermath cleanup (cleanup, reconstruction of a burned-down elementary school,) Black Forest National Park and trail cleanup (coordinator,) Korean Culture Day at the library, (model and co-coordinator with my mom,) volunteer for multiple events at the public library through Teen Advisory Board
Pretty sure I’ll have close to 1000 hours by the time I graduate.
Summer Activities: the internship, part-time jobs, tutoring, babysitting, teaching piano
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Titles of the required readings: 7 (don’t know how to rate it since I just listed the ones I liked the most. 100% honest)
Titles of the books you read for pleasure: 8.5 (was a little more descriptive about these since these were works I read according to will. Listed a mix between nonfiction and fiction works)
Titles of the print, electronic publications and websites: 8 (talked about the fanfiction site I write on, the Wall Street Journal, and Cosmo because it’s funny)
Titles of the films, concerts, shows, exhibits, lectures and other entertainments: 7 (the only concerts I’ve ever “been to” were experienced through fancams on Instagram and YouTube, so I talked about that and tried to make it funny but I guess I failed)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10 - AP Euro teacher. Loved me since sophomore year. Talked all positive, all strengths
Teacher Rec #2: 9.5 - AP Calc teacher, I applied as a math major, he talked about how I’m always one step ahead in class and help him out with my other classmates
Counselor Rec: 9 - talked about my junior year in which I was diagnosed with severe depression, explaining the slump in my grades, and said despite that slump, I’m a hard worker
Additional Rec: 6 - my youth pastor never wrote a letter of rec before so it wasn’t that great, but I thought all my bases were covered with the other three.
Interview: wasn’t offered one

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Math, Chemistry, Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): Colorado
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Regular public
Ethnicity: Asian (Korean to be specific, probably worked against me since I wasn’t that stellar of an Asian applicant)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: ~$100k - ~$150k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation immigrant family living in America (technically zeroth generation attending college in America)

Reflection

Strengths: Letters of rec (minus my youth pastor’s)
Weaknesses: essays, test scores, GPA, school is virtually unknown and doesn’t have that great of an academic reputation
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was too cookie-cutter of an Asian applicant (not excellent, not bad,) my test scores were probably a little iffy since I took the ACT 3x (4, including the state-mandated one.)
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Rejected at Duke, Amherst, Yale, U-Penn, and Colorado College (after being deferred)
Waitlisted at University of Chicago and Washington & Lee
Accepted at all in-state safety universities

General Comments:

My GPA trend was downwards because of the depression and that probably reflected poorly on me. I also only took 2 AP classes junior year so that might’ve seemed to demonstrate laziness or lack of motivation. And I was so burned out by the time I got to this application that I regretfully didn’t even try to write coherently. I just threw down a bunch of truths and called it good. Again, this probably seemed to reflect laziness or even lack of enthusiasm for the school.

I hope this can be of help to future applicants

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, rank, GPA, leadership!! My essays are probably what got me in.
Weaknesses: Testing, and i’m pretty average imo!
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays maybe? Also my deferral update and letter of continued interest probably helped.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at STANFORD, Rice, UPenn, UT Austin and USC; waitlisted at UChicago and Brown; rejected at Columbia

General Comments: Don’t fret over college admissions, guys. Give your applications everything you have and just hope for the best. My first decisions were literally all waitlists and a deferral from Stanford; then, I got into 4 amazing schools! You will end up where you belong. This rejection means that Columbia wasn’t right for me, and I’m okay with that. If you’re reading this, calm down and know that you will succeed. I hope this helps someone

Decision: Rejected - SEAS

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send (I think)
ACT (breakdown): 33 Composite

IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics II, BC Calc, AP English Language, AP US Government, AP Macroeconomics, Independent Study - Comp Sci (made a PC game), Acting

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Volunteer for special needs children for 6 years, Editor of school newspaper (Opinion/Sports), Math League, Science League, Peer Leadership, Community Service club
Job/Work Experience: Gardener/Landscaper for 4 years, tutor
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer for special needs children for 6 years,
Summer Activities: Gardener/Landscaper for 4 years, tutor, designed calculator program for Physics teacher, independent game development
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App (9) - I honestly feel that this essay was really good, but obviously Columbia didn’t think so. I talked about how a single traumatic incident in my life didn’t break me, and that I have dealt with more than my fair share of adversity. As a result of this incident, I’ve become the man I am today, and talked about several redeeming qualities.
Columbia SEAS (8) - Discussed how video games, and video development led to my interest in Computer Science, and the problem solving related to Computer Science.
Why Columbia (8) - Talked about programs within Columbia, and how I planned to utilized them. I also talked about the type of student that Columbia attracts, and how I wanted to impart my knowledges and experiences on them, and vice versa.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: AP Physics Teacher (8) - didn’t read it, but I’ve had him for 2 years. He knows I’m really good with computers and such, and apparently, he writes really good recommendations.
Teacher Rec #2: Calc/Comp Sci/Geometry teacher (8) - didn’t read it, but I’ve had him for 3 years, for a total of 5 classes or so. He knows I’m really good with computers and programming, so I trust he spoke highly of me
Counselor Rec: 10 - Didn’t read it, but I assume it was great. I’ve been no stranger to her since my freshman year, and I’m sure she said how fantastic I am

Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Didn’t get one

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, but I’m sure they laughed when they saw it
Intended Major: Computer Science
State (if domestic applicant): Jersey
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White as casper the ghost
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: For the 2015 fiscal year, $450k+, but usually $250k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely zero

Reflection

Strengths: I tried to come across as an average joe (by Ivy standards). I knew I didn’t have the best grades/scores/ ECs/awards, but overall, I’m a very passionate, dedicated, and intelligent person. I’ve always tried to stay true to that fact, and hoped that for once, I wouldn’t be rejected for it. Also, I can guarantee, without a doubt, that had I been given the opportunity, I would have certainly made the most of it, I’m not one to squander golden opportunities.

Weaknesses: I’m a white male, who has no stellar awards, scores, etc.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Affirmative action, in addition to a decent sized population of kids that have way more awards/ECs than me, and much higher scores than me. Columbia doesn’t seem to want a kid like me to be apart of its freshman class.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Rejected: Columbia, Cornell (ED), Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, MIT
Accepted: Penn State, University of Maryland

General Comments: Congrats to everyone who was accepted  To any future applicants who are reading this, I say to you, don’t be discouraged from applying even if you have less than stellar stats (although, I was pretty damn close if I do say so myself). As you can see, I was 2/9 on the college acceptances, but I’m not going to let it slow me down. I received more rejections in the last 5 days than most of my peers (or most of the people here) have received in 5 months. It’s important to remember that as long as you were content with the effort and energy you put into the whole process, you should not feel ashamed that you weren’t accepted. Good luck, and may you find success in your endeavors.

Decision: Waitlisted - CC

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Academic Decathlon (Team captain 10,11,12) [First time any school in our district has placed 1st at regionals and state, qualified for nationals and placed 6th in the nation, had lots of media coverage since our team really came out of nowhere. Counselor Rec: 5.5/10; Average, she knows my name and that’s a big deal at a large public school that hasn’t ever sent a student to an ivy

Applied for Financial Aid?: I don’t remember.
Intended Major: Industrial Engineering/Operations Research
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public; low income/at risk small high school of about 500 total (it’s an early college high school funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation….students simultaneously attend both college and high school)
Ethnicity: Latina, Asian, and White (I’m a mutt.)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: as low as you can go….maybe 13K?
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation college, tragic backstory (single parent household, poor, mother had a stroke, job loss, evicted from house, divorce….I should write a book. jk)

Reflection

Strengths: I’m the poor, minority female every college wants to diversify their campus. I’m also the valedictorian of my class as of now and am attending college while at high school (dual credit). Lots and lots of extracurricular activities, too. I have a tragic backstory in which I drew a lot of material for my essays.
Weaknesses: I suck at writing, especially about myself. I don’t have amazing SAT and ACT scores. And IB and AP wasn’t offered at my school.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My SAT/ACT weren’t up to par and I didn’t proofread my essays (oops).
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Columbia, Houston Baptist, UT El Paso
Waitlisted: Stanford
Rejected: University of Southern California
I also was selected as a finalist for the Gates Millennium Scholarship. I’m waiting for that decision.

General Comments:
I think I was on the verge of not being accepted and the interview helped to push me to the good side. Scores aren’t everything apparently when it comes to college.

**Decision: Deferred to Rejected **

This was my worst application by far. I should NOT have applied Early Decision because I was not ready to submit the application. I should’ve waited for the regular-decision round and submitted better essays and a cleaner, more polished application. This application was significantly different from my others.

Here’s what I take away from this experience: you don’t HAVE to apply Early Decision to a college. I got into 6 out of 8 Ivy League schools regular decision. It takes time to write the perfect essay and polish the application, and that’s okay! Don’t feel pressured to apply early anywhere, which is what I did.

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2100 (750 Writing [10 essay], 700 CR, 650 M)
Please note I originally applied with a 1960 SAT score. Retook the exam in January.

ACT (breakdown): None
SAT II: SAT US History - 780 / SAT French - 710 / SAT World - 710
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 100.4

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  • Writer for the Huffington Post Teen -Editor-in-chief of school newspaper -Contributor to my town's newspaper (I write articles about college, SATs, and education) -Multi Published writer in literary magazines (an essay about track and field, an essay about cosmetics & chemicals) -College Essay was published in a magazine -Have my own travel blog (features photos and entries on my trips abroad) -Quiz Bowl Team Captain

Also talked about French tutoring, Cross Country and Track. I did not list this on my other applications.

Job/Work Experience:
-Cashier at movie theater for 2014 summer.

Volunteer/Community service: French tutoring

Summer Activities: Cashier at movie theater

Essays:
Common App – I applied Early decision to Columbia, and I am almost certain that my essay was terrible. I wrote about doing track & field and cross country. It was a cliched mess, for sure. I should’ve submitted my regular-decision essay(s). They were better and different.

My supplements definitely weren’t that great either. I give my “Why Columbia” essay a 10/10. But the major essay on French was lackluster, probably. And I could’ve written a better EC essay. I rewrote all types of essay for my regular-decision schools

Teacher Recommendation:
One from my French teacher (10/10) - I am a heavy participant in this class and I have been the top student for 4 years. I tutor, I share French literature that I read in my spare time with my teacher, I do research for the class, and I’ve taught a little.
AP US History Teacher (9/10) - I was the top student in this class and I won an award for my efforts. I adore history and I am also very concerned about social issues. He told me that I had the best projects and essays in the class.
Counselor Rec:
I’d give it a 9/10. We are close friends. In the summertime, my school made us fill out a sheet of all our hobbies, favorite media, and accomplishments - so I guess that helped too.

Interview: My interviewer was very pleased with me. She thought I was a stellar applicant.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: French Language, Education
State (if domestic applicant): New York
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $40,000, single parent home
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: My writing and journalism, my grades and scores, URM status too, choice of major
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I made sure to highlight the fact that I am a published writer. I also think it’s different that I want to study French. Make sure your Common App essay defines who you are.
Weaknesses: SAT Math score is on the lower end, but to be honest, I’m proud of it. That’s the best I could achieve. Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Well I was rejected because my application was terrible. I know it was. I should not have applied Early Decision because I was not ready. It takes time to craft good essays and I was too obsessed with trying to get in.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted to 6 Ivy League Schools: Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown
Accepted: NYU, Fordham, University of Connecticut, SUNY Binghampton, SUNY Stony Brook, Siena College
Rejected: Yale, Columbia, Hunter College, Queens College

Other:
Congratulations to all who were admitted. I will be attending Harvard University or the University of Pennsylvania.

I applied to all 8 Ivy League schools and I was admitted to 6. I am not a legacy or a first generation, for those of you who would like to know.

Rejected: Duke, all Ivies except Columbia
Waitlisted: Columbia

I was surprised that after 7 rejections from Ivies, Columbia was the school to waitlist me. I’m thankful, and hope I get in, but I know the likelihood of that is very very low. Just looking at my stats/application, and those of accepted students, I don’t see a huge difference, which is what makes me really sad. To think that I was close, and then failed in some regard sucks. Anyway, I have some great choices, and will hopefully move on quickly.
