**~Columbia University Fall 2017 Transfer Thread~**

Hey fam!!
I need some advice.
I forgot to apply for financial aid.
I could theoretically afford it with no financial aid (maybe) if I take out some loans, but I’d obviously rather not.
However, with decisions being so close, I don’t want me submitting a late financial aid request or just needing aid in general to lead to my rejection.
I also don’t know if they’d hear me out if I was accepted and then asked for aid after being accepted. My application feels strong, but it’s mostly my GPA and I have a 1900 SAT, which isn’t super high. I was also the salutatorian of my high school with a 4.3 my senior year and a 4.5 my junior year. I come from a very very small town with no clubs, community events, extracurriculars, etc, so I relied mostly on grades and personal statement/essays. I’m transfering because my previous college didn’t have the major program I wanted or the resources for connecting me to jobs/internships after and during college.

I just don’t want this to make or break me, I also don’t wanna be in debt. Any insight?? Thanks!!

@lbmoney the longer you wait, the less likely it is that you’ll get financial aid because it’s contingent on available funds after the deadline. If I were you, I’d anonymously call the FA office to ask these questions. Also, they’re need blind so applying won’t affect your chances

@lbmoney Get in contact with the FA office as soon as possible and let them know of your situation. It takes time to fill out the FAFSA and CSS, as well as getting tax documents processed in IDOC. Generally, the deadline for the FA documents is a postmark deadline, so you are allowed to turn things in after it. As @lexluther96 said, admissions in need-blind so your decision is independent of FA needed.

Did anyone send updates to Columbia and got update confirmation back? I sent updates long ago, but heard nothing back from the school.

Never heard back as well. @inordie

@inordie @luckybaby I usually email my updates to ugrad-confirm@columbia.edu and, in order to see if the update was received, I email ugrad-transfer@columbia.edu. They might get annoyed at me, but this application cycle is extremely important to me, so I usually ask them.

@inordie @luckybaby Oh, but they always respond as to whether or not they received my update.

Thank you very much! @collegebusiness

I feel like excessive updates shouldn’t be sent. >2 is too much

Out of curiosity what kind of updates are you guys sending? Current grades? Summer internships?

I wrote a news article, so I sent them a paper

@sc4 I sent them summer internships that I will be participating in and I sent them updates as to new positions that I hold in various organizations.

I recently submitted a research paper for publication review, should I send an update to Columbia though it’s pretty late? And, how long are you guys’ update letter? I wrote about what I learned during my research but dunno will the adcom bother reading it. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I am pretty sure the decisions are basically made by now, I am not sure how much this additional information would change anything at this point.

can anybody else log on to the financial aid viewer? I can log on with my Columbia ID, but I’m assuming this doesn’t mean anything

@esterling I don’t think that it means anything special! I can log in as well.

@esterling @Vivien123 I can log in as well

it doesn’t mean anything, everyone can log in

I really need them to just send us an email right now telling us when decisions will be released.

I predict, based off of last year’s thread, that we will either get an email on the 26th or the 27th about when decisions will be released. But, I am also extremely anxious!!! I feel like applying to transfer to another college is much scarier than applying as a high school student because, after spending a year or so in college, you have figured out what you want to study, what you find best in a college, what college setting you prefer, etc. Anyways, Best of luck to ALL.
