Columbia University High School Summer Program NYC

I was thinking about appyling to the program for this upcoming summer and was wondering if it’s worth it? What are the dorms like? Are they single or doubles? Do you pay for both session 1 and 2? And if someone remembers the price since they haven’t posted it yet. Please please please give me some feedback on your own past experiences good or bad or if you have other recommendations for programs similar to this one. Thank you!!!

hey! I did the program last summer and absolutely loved it. definitely recommend it. :slight_smile:

to answer your questions:

  • you don’t know what type of room you’re getting until you get there. it could be single or double. mostly singles, though.
  • dorms really depend. I got Hartley, which is pretty crappy. furnald is really nice. I didn’t go to the others. but even though I was in Hartley, it was still super fun because of the whole dorm life thing (group meetings, hanging with friends, etc.). and honestly you’ll be spending barely any time in your dorm so don’t let those types of concerns hold you back!
  • you can choose to do either session, or you can do both if you want.
  • the price I think was somewhere around $10k?? I think the tuition fee was somewhere around $7k but if you factor in how much you’ll be spending over there (nyc is very expensive), airfare, etc. I think it would end up being around that amount. (I don’t remember for sure but I’m pretty sure it’s something like that)

my take on it is this: if you can afford it, do it. if this program would be a financial struggle for your family, don’t.

it’s not really some prestigious, completely study-oriented program. but depending on what class you take, you can learn a lot (I know I did) and establish a relationship with your professor. I also got a really nice personalized letter of rec. but in the larger, more popular classes, I hear it’s a lot harder to do that.

this program really gives you an insight into college life and the amount of freedom they give you is crazy. i made so many wonderful friends, who I still keep in touch with today. and nyc is such an amazing place!! it’s worth it for the experience aspect mainly. my class was actually really nice and I learned so so much; however, I have read posts by other users on CC who disagree. personally, I didn’t meet a single person who felt like they weren’t learning anything or who didn’t enjoy their class.

overall, I really liked how I was able to have both studies experience and life experience through this program. :slight_smile:

cons;

  • it’s not something very prestigious. since it’s not a selective program, there will be slackers and people who goof off, clearly not there to learn anything. there were two people like that in my class but it wasn’t something that interfered with other people’s learning. if you want to learn, you can.
  • def quite expensive

Thank you so much this was extremely helpful!!!

@goldnotes how expensive exactly was it? im applying for intro to creative writing. @kate2888 what about you?
