Who cares? Year-to-year fluctuations in USNews will not affect the reputation of any top school. Since I applied in 1998, I can't remember Columbia being ranked anywhere besides in the 8-10 range.

People who matter (employers, grad schools, etc.) can't quote you the current US News rankings. They have a general idea of where schools stand relative to each other, and don't seek guidance from US News to tell them whether to hire a Columbia graduate or a Duke graduate.

"Right, mrsopresident, and hotel mgmt, ilr and architecture are huge and vastly important programs."

--hey, dont hate. they obviously got cornell ranked higher than other schools like brown!!

I can't believe anyone would use these silly ass rankings to say one school is better than the other, especially when the difference is so negligible. If you look back at the rankings over the years, Cornell has on average been ranked 12th and Brown 13th. If you can honestly infer that one school is better than the other based on this, have at it, but stay away from law school.

people "in the know" don't actually care. it's people on CC, who think they know what people in the know think, who get all worked up about USNews.

That was a pretty stupid comment on my part, oh well. I reap the "rewards" of that comment.

Does anybody think that the 10 ranking would cause a decrease in the ED and RD applicant pools? I'd love to see that.

I don't understand how people can clearly claim that Columbia University should be ranked above Caltech. Although the two schools are radically different in their aims and academic offerings, Tech is clearly more distinguished for what it does, has a better Student/Faculty ratio, and has a much smarter entering class. I'd even say that the school is more selective than Columbia (Yes, I do realize that the Columbia acceptance rate is lower, but Tech's pool is much more selective than Columbia's).

I can see how Columbia might rival Tech, but I don't see how Tech being ranked above Columbia is preposterous.

Snoreeeeeeeee

EWWWWW....GET CORNELL STUDENTS OUT OF HERE...EWWWWW
They're not allowed to associate with students from other schools in the Ivy league.

Er... Did I even mention Caltech in the statement you quoted me in? I don't think I've ever cared enough to even mention Caltech until now... Not sure why you quoted me to prove a point. Illogical juxtaposition of opinions there, mate. (Why do I constantly attract the idiots of online forums? I guess I'm not the only one who shares those sentiments) sigh...

My one comment is that you'll find that a reason that Duke is ahead of Dartmouth, Columbia, and Brown despite a higher acceptance rate is because of a higher SAT score average.. I've read that despite the fact that yield went down, SAT average went up, and you can't forget Duke's high faculty resources ranking..

Last year
Duke: #4
Columbia:#13
Dartmouth:#17
Brown:#18

Also to let people know.. a scandal doesn't affect the quality of a school... so don't be like, "LOLS!! DOOK SHOULD GO DOWN TEN PLACES IN USNWR!!".. and finally... Duke has always had a relatively high acceptance rate compared to CDB.. but it still manages to be ranked ahead in USNWR.

If this is true.. I would say.. no surprises here. But I really think that Brown needs to be ranked higher as well, that shows there is something wrong with USNWR's ranking...

Duke values SAT scores more than every single school in the country...whether that makes it a better school is debatable.

I'm not saying that it makes it a 'better' school (there are other reasons why Duke is one of the best schools in the US besides SAT averages, :D).. I only mean that this will increase Duke's selectivity ranking in US News..

Why do so many non-Columbia kids hang out in our forum? I haven't visited other school's forums in a looooong time. Everyone thinks his/her college is the best, we get it. This thread, as many others, ends in a futile debate.

They feel the need to go prancing around begging for attention and validating their crap-ass college.

Haha.. didn't even realize this was the Columbia forum.
I just check "Latest Posts" and post in wherever I feel like..

Also I felt the need to give you some sort of guidance.. :p

All five schools mentioned in this quote are great schools.. the differences in quality between DCPDCB are so small (Caltech is considered more so HYPSM.. added Cornell & Brown in there).. that it is silly to argue that some of these schools are superior than the others..

Vesalvay, you're an idiot.

quite honestly i dont think that institutes of technology should be ranked with national universities. They should get their own rankings.

btw

vesalvay i love you lol.

Although I don't really like the idea, it definitely makes some sense. Just curious, why do you consider Tech schools different enough from national universities to warrant a separate ranking? Also what's your definition of a national university?
