Columbia vs. Emory (two thirds tuition scholarhip)

Hey,

-interested in pre-med (bio track)
-want to go into med school
-assuming 2/3 scholarship from Emory and no money from Columbia, which school would be the better choice?
-how do they compare academically, in terms of research oppotunities, prestige, socially etc.

Please help me decide which would be the better choice!

Consider using your Emory scholarship to squeeze some money out of the Financial Aid office.

My friend had received no aid at all at first, but he appealed–not only did he write a letter, but his family appeared before a representative to plead his case–and he is now attending Columbia on ~10,000 in grants every year.

Thanks kwu, but how do you think the two schools compare? Would I be receiving a world class education at both schools? Education is the key factor for me.

I would go with Emory… both provide a great education but I think that Columbia is not worth all that extra money because you will get a great education at Emory anyways.

thanks. bumpp

yeah push Columbia for more money, unless you plan to work in finance, that much of a cost difference might not be justified.

I would go to Emory.
Simply because you will be over your head in debt for med school. Why add on the extra debt for UG?
Once you get in med school, no one will care which UG you went to.

Emory…since you’ll be going to med school…which is VERY expensive.

Can your parents afford Columbia, or would you have to borrow?

Emory is less money and you want to go to med school, so it seems like a good idea. Also, surely you know about the amazing health/medical facilities and research available at Emory. Hence why people flock there ;)

For people headed to med school, money is the name of the game. If you can’t squeeze money from Columbia, I’d recommend Emory hands down. And they have great health facilities–it’s a good place for a pre-med student.

*Can your parents afford Columbia, or would you have to borrow? *

Good point. However, even if the parents can afford $200k+ for Columbia, if that means that they can’t help out at all for med school, then Columbia is a bad idea.

If the parents can help with med school if the student chooses Emory, then Emory is by far the better choice.

The only scenario that points to Columbia is one where the parents are so affluent that they can afford to pay for Columbia **and **med school.
