Columbia vs. Georgetown

Hello,

I've been accepted into both Columbia and the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown as a transfer student. My majors are International Relations and French. Does anyone have any words of wisdom concerning the level of study offered at the two schools?

Also, it is important for me to study at a campus that is LGBTQA friendly. Any insights about the overall social climate at these schools?

Thanks!

Columbia has a climate that leans very much so to the left. I think that Columbia would be the right pick for you.

I’d personally go with Columbia, but this is tough since your major is IR. I faced the same decision, and although I ultimately attended a different school than either of them, I would have gone to Columbia over Georgetown SFS since I wasn’t very decided on my major. Columbia would definitely be LGBTQA friendly; I can’t comment much about Georgetown’s social climate as I never visited.

Our Gtown tour guide made a specific point about how LGBT friendly the school was.

I think this comes down to whether NY or DC excites you. These are both great choices. I would lean towards Gtown SFS, but that’s me, and you couldn’t go wrong either way.

If having a GLBT-friendly atmosphere is very important to you, Columbia is the obvoius choice. Columbia has the oldest and longest-running queer student group/organization of any college in the country, and you have New York at your doorstep.

Georgetown has to emphasize its GLBT-friendliness nowadays because it had such a horrible reputation for homosexual tolerance from the 80s. This is, perhaps, due to to its Jesuit roots. The campus is much more LGBT-friendly today.

Definitely visit both. SFS is about as good as you’ll find for IR, and the nearby Capitol is full of internship opportunities. But then you’ve got the UN in NYC. Truthfully, for IR, this is one of the best possible decisions you could face.

On the other hand, Columbia is an ivy league school and there’s no doubt going there will open many doors as well.

You can’t go wrong with either choice.
