Columbia vs. Other Schools

So the more I research about Columbia, the more I love it, and the more I find out that it may not be the best in rankings. But really, how much do these rankings mean? Is there much of a difference between say Princeton and Columbia? Is there a "huge" gap between HYPS and Columbia or is it merely exaggerated?

from what I hear, it's largely exaggerated.

If you're referring to the World News Rankings and prestige/snob appeal, Columbia doesn't fare as well as HYPS. If you're referring to the education, it's as good or better.

go look at the methodologies of the rankings and then you can decide what is most important to you, like endowment.

remember that a lot of things arent covered in rankings, like nobel prize winners, availability of research, etc.

take the rankings with a grain of salt. do they accurately depict the differences between tier 1 and 2 schools? yes. do they really tell you anything about schools within 4 or 5 places of each other? no. like mit is ranked higher than columbia but they are completely different schools.

sorry this is disjointed, i'm really tired.

KQ1. i tot you;ve applied ed, does all these matter anymore? you've done ED

I think jhl was drunk when he posted that :D

KQ1 I'm sorry if I sound like a dick right now, but I looked at your stats and I don't think you'll have to worry about choosing HYPS or Columbia for that matter.

You're stats will not get you in.

**I'm generally peeved when people start stuff like "I love Columbia but it's lower ranked OMGGOMGOMG".

what's hyps?

harvard, yale, princeton, stanford

sometimes included in the abbreviation are MIT and a C (although I don't see HYPSMC very often), though I don't really know if it's for Caltech or Columbia

haha i was not drunk.. just in a rush.. because I'm doing my A levels.. been lazy and appearing on CC.. so last minute revision

C = Caltech. Arguably best school to study science in, but very very specialized so it's often left out because of its narrow appeal.

That's generally the case for those who ask the stupidest of questions on here.

That's generally the case for those arrogants with the most useless answers on here.

And so the cylce of hate continues...

Um, at least 3 Columbia students/alums and 1 parent of the same have posted on here.

Well it depends WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, in school, and
also your career goals, financial situation, personality, how much workload, etc.

There is no one RIGHT college for everyone, if you post some more information about what you intend to do,etc, maybe advice can come on hand.
