My first semester of high school my gpa was a 2.7. I know thats horrible, I had a really hard time adjusting to high school. I go to a rigorous private day school in Atlanta, GA if that matters. Ever since I've maintained a 4.0 GPA, and semi-strong extracurriculars (2 season athlete, various clubs, ex.). My current GPA is a 3.74 UW but I plan to bring it up to a 3.85. I'm currently a junior and I was wondering if I do really well on my SATs if I would have a chance at columbia, or and Ivy League schools for that matter? Thanks so much for your responses.

Improving from a 2.7 is amazing and should help you out. Is the 3.74 unweighted or weighted? Either way, you need to improve it, especially if that’s weighted. You would have to do spectacularly on your SATs. But, I’ve seen it done with scores like yours. As long as you can really improve your grades and have amazing extra curricular activities, then you should be fine.

Would definitely address this in an additional info letter to Columbia or integrate into your essays. It’s great that you improved but they will be concerned about how you can perform at their level of rigor. Have hope but realize it may be too late to change things.

Thanks for all your advice

Columbia is getting harder and harder to make but if that is what you really want make sure to explain in your essay why your gpa was so low. Best of luck!!

Realistically, I think your chances at an Ivy League are rather low, even with the improvement. I’ve seen people get rejected/waitlisted with 4.0’s and close to perfecr SAT scores. My older sister was rejected from all the ivies she applied to with a cumulative gpa of 3.7 UW and a 2250 SAT. She still managed to get into a decent school (University of Notre Dame) and she really seems to like it there. GPA isn’t everything though so you might still have a shot if your SAT’s or ACT’s are extremely good, your essay is unique, and your extracurriculars are strong. Keep in mind though that you might still be happy at a non-ivy. My sister didn’t get into any ivies, but she got into a lot of decent schools, including USC, UVA, NYU, georgetown, and of course Notre DAme.
