Columbia's course repeat policy/grade replacement

So I'm anticipating a poor grade for a class this semester and am wondering what their policy is. If you retake it, does the new grade replace the old? Do they both stay on but the lower one doesnt get factored in anymore?

I tried looking it up online but didn't really find anything.

Anyone know?

I have never read the answer, but I feel pretty sure that I know it anyway. Columbia gets about 35,000 applications and admits about 2400 applicants–about 7% of their applicant pool. They could fill their freshman class many times over without having to admit any applicants who are less than top-notch.

The sad reality is, if you’ve received a grade in high school that needs replacing, you’re probably not a serious contender.

I don’t mean to suggest that your hopes are necessarily dashed if you’ve ever received a B, but I kind of do mean to suggest that if you’ve ever received a C-, you shouldn’t expect the fat envelope from Columbia.

I’m pretty sure s/he’s referring to retaking a Columbia course, not high school.

I googled it with no results. Maybe ask your advisor? I’m interested in learning the answer to this as well.

Most interesting question. I have not been able to research the answer either. Does anyone know?

In the absence of any evidence of a replacement / forgiveness policy, I think it’s safe to assume that no such policy exists. I believe that they both stay on, and they’re both factored in.

I don’t think there’s a policy. It’s possible to get a grade changed, but it requires approval from the professor, the department head, your adviser, and the Pope: [Grade Changes | Columbia University Registrar](http://registrar.columbia.edu/content/grade-changes)
