It's ppl like albert, who never get humour, who make this world so miserable.

Here, here, Pearfire.

Bye-bye Albert! Love you! Bye now!

all kidding aside, though, Fagles' translations beat the hell out of the Lattimore and Fitzgerald translations. His Odyssey kicks all kinds of ass.

albert, I understand why you feel how you feel; but as you can tell, I'm a beatnik. So i really dont care what credentials a school has, just how much i can learn. I think I'm a great champion in comparison to some of the kids in ivy leagues, but no, I dont mean to belittle them (externally). I apologize.

sorry for getting so defensive about things lol..

Na its cool. I said it was justified because I do think thats the impression I unintentionally gave. Sorry (again).

I dont wear a columbia sweatshirt because it costs 35 dollars from the bookstore -***!
at steve and barries a harvard sweatshirt is 8.

This is a good topic.

I know for sure, in general, that students on other college/university campuses do have an inferiority complex toward other schools. One former NYU student visited that university last month and commented:

"As a Stern alum I was glad to visit the old school. I was glad to see that its leadership in finance continues unabated. I recently found out that in the period 1990-2006 Stern was the undisputable top dog in publications at the leading finance journals, more than doubling Columbia. Less satisfyingly, during my visit I also realized that an old nasty vice has not yet been entirely erased. For inside the confines of the Greenwich Village-based institution a certain inferiority complex with regards to its Harlem-based uber-rival remains very much, and very sadly, alive."

That's a lie. Columbia is in Morningside Heights!

tehehe. he said uber.

Too true, karot.

Plus are you trying to say Columbia has an inferiority complex or NYU? :P

he's pointing out one NYU alum who says NYU still has an inferiority complex with respect to Columbia.

Yeah, exactly. I just thought we were on a Columbia-inferiority wavelength here... Apparently not. :P

I feel so cool and ghetto when Columbia is called "Harlem-based". I'm not even going to say anything about being uber-rivals...

You should try living in actual harlem. I can almost act like i've got street cred.

I hear you're the new pimp and crack dealer.

You do have street cred.

I've heard Columbia referred to derisively as SUNY-Harlem.

At least it's not SUNY-Ithaca.

People who make negative comments about Columbia's neighborhood tend to either be ignorant, racist, or a combination of both.

I have to admit, the Fagles translation is so much more pleasing to read, but I did enjoy some of the technical preciseness of Lattimore's prose. It had a tighter feel and poignancy, even though it lacked Fagles' flow.
