I really looked to major in International Relations, but now I’m also looking at the Journalism program to minor or double major in. Do any COM have any opinions on how they like the program and do you feel the program is strong and respected? Thank you very much!

I’m not in COM (I’m actually an IR major myself), but I can tell you BU’s journalism program is extremely well-respected and IIRC one of the top-ranked in the country/world.

Thanks! How do you like the IR program? I assume there’s good study abroad and internship programs.

A fair amount. I actually went abroad through another school’s program because I wanted to go to the middle east (I have a middle east concentration). So just keep in mind you don’t have to study abroad through BU, though I’ve heard a lot of good things about the BU programs. The Geneva program is supposedly tailored for IR majors.

Thanks! Yeah I’ve really become interested in IR and Journalism. IR in part because the good programs. I’m looking to possibly go to Europe, hopefully Italy.

Any other thoughts on COM?

I’m in COM, but for Advertising. However, the friends in the Journalism program seem to love it. Two of my friends are associate sports editors for The Daily Free Press, so they have a lot of writing experience already under their belts as first semester sophomores (they also wrote a lot last year). There are also a lot of other ways to get involved in writing on campus as well.
But from what I know, the Journalism program is definitely well respected, as COM is one of the top schools for it’s field.

Thanks so much! The program sounds great. My app is just about done. I’m getting excited!

Final part to this, sorry about being annoying. Is the grade deflation thing real? Or is it just a curve that lowers the chance for an A. Just curious. Thanks so much!

Depends on the subject and class. In COM and IR you probably won’t experience it. If you were taking a math or science track, it’s more likely you would face some tough curves. The only curved class I’ve had in 3 years at BU as an IR major was intro microeconomics. It curved around a B- but I still got an A.

Oh wow thanks! Good to know what I’m looking at isn’t really effected.
