Combat Weapons Team

Does anyone know how competitive the Combat Weapons Team is to make?

Extremely, extremely, extremely competitive. Almost impossible to get on unless you're prior service. They have several ex-Rangers on the team.

I don't know about having many ex-rangers on the team, but I do know their tryout is insanely hard. It was an entire day of physical torture.

Did you make the team? A couple of upperclassmen who are in Infantry Tactics were the ones that told me that...

what exactly is this team?

I would like to know what the combat weapons team is as well.

USMA Combat Weapons Team
In the rapidly evolving security environment of the twenty-first century, emphasis must be placed on adaptive and innovative training that prepares soldiers to aggressively address the myriad of possibilities they may face in modern combat. The United States, in the last several years, has engaged in warfare ranging from low intensity conflict operations to theater level combat. Throughout these operations soldiers have found themselves engaged more often than not in urban environments, and these urban insurgencies are likely to proliferate as the War on Terrorism continues.
The Combat Weapons Team trains cadets to combine the tactics, techniques and protocols of military units, domestic police forces, government agencies, and civilian security services to create a comprehensive foundation of skills in urban warfare and promote creative solutions to the problems involved in close quarters battle.

did you see the parachute team? dang that looks friggin cool.

i hear its pretty hard to get onto the parachute team. you need good grades, good athleticism, and tons of commitment to the team.

If I end up at west point, the mountaineering and orienteering teams would be in my to-see list :)

It says that USMA's team participates in Joint competition with USNA, USAFA, and USCGA....I'm assuming that these Service Academies also offer a CWT. Does anyone have any information on USNA's similar team?

zero-

i guess that explains uscga's high attrition...

haah kiddin, im sure they dont use real bullets.

USNA Combat Weapons Team is at http://www.usna.edu/combat/

Taffy i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they dont shoot each other on the combat weapons team...

"I got jokes and jokes and jokes and jokes and .... spaghetti spaghetti spaghetti spaghetti" - Dave Chappelle

Scuba Team looks cool too but its only a team of 10 and you probably have to swim a bunch to make it through tryouts, i'd define plebe drowning.

Mountaineering apparently is easy to get on and it gets you out of parading. They get to go rock climbing and all that jazz, I'm so in.

I've been staring at the cadet clubs page for a while... it looks like they have some other clubs that look like the combat weapons team, like the tactics club and all that.

Infantry tactics looks like it could be alotta fun. Hopefully chances are higher of getting into than Combat Weapons.

I've shot Trap and Skeet with the guys in that club. Good bunch of guys will definetly be joining that team.

I am a current member on the Combat Weapons Team at West Point (class of 2012) and wanted to clear up a bit of confusion for everyone that has seen and will see this post.

To answer the very first question. The Combat Weapons Team is a fairly competitive team. We currently have an active roster of 23 cadets ranging from Plebe to Firstie (Freshman to Senior). For this year’s tryouts we had an initial 400 cadets sign up to tryout and eventually took 10 of those that completed the tryouts and met the desired criteria. So needless to say we are a competitive team. And that is what dissuades a lot of cadets from even showing up to tryouts.

My first piece of advice to anyone remotely interested in the Combat Weapons Team would be to look at the team website, there is a plethora of information there. [Combat Weapons Team](http://www.usma.edu/uscc/dca/clubs/guns/index.html) My second piece of advice would be to NOT believe anything someone tells you about tryouts unless they are on the team. Tryouts differ greatly from year to year and are unpredictable by design. They are also both mentally and physically challenging by design, we only take individuals that hold themselves to very high standards and demonstrate qualities of trainable well rounded individuals. If you do not attempt to better yourself on a daily basis, you are probably not a good match for the Combat Weapons Team. On the other hand, if you enjoy challenging yourself and you think that you may be up for the challenge, should you decide to come to west point, or if you’re already here look out for the team at club night at the beginning of every year.

I’ve already gone on for longer than I intended, but hopefully this info helps some future cadet candidates out there looking for a real challenge when they get to West Point. As for the other inquiries that were posted, take a good look at our well maintained website. Like I said before, there is a lot of good info on there to let you get a good picture of who we are and what we do.

The Selection page on the CWT website did not mention a marksmanship test. Does prior marksmanship skill have any impact on selections, or is the process based entirely on physical and mental strength?

Because of the highly competitive nature of the Combat Weapons Team’s selection process, we do not discuss anything about the actual selection process besides what is already on the website. With reference to your question, take my response as you will and realize that a strong ability to adapt in adverse conditions is a highly looked at selection criteria.

My son - West Point Class of 2015 - is on the team. He is not prior service but is a highly ranked Cadet and in great shape physically. At his trial there were about 150 Cadet candidates only 5-10 were chosen. It was a very difficult mental and physical test that lasted 1 1/2 days.
