hi i'm a korean living in korea, planning to graduate a korean high school(that just kinda came out..lol)

i'm dead scared about applying to american colleges cuz like i'm the only one preparing for it in our school and i practically know more than our so called 'counselor' does about the admissions, and i'm still learning new stuff everytime i log in CC(thanx, everyone!!!:-))

anyway, here are my stats :

i'm an american citizen(if that helps)

NEW SAT : (May) V/M/W 680/780/580 (i feel sick whenever i see that writing score..essay 6...I WAS NERVOUS) ~ 2060
(Oct) V/M/W 650/790/710 (essay 9) ~ 2150
SAT2 : Bio 800 Math 2c 800 (planning chem for nov... aiming for another 800)

gpa : 3.8~3.9(between there... korea uses a different scoring scale but i'm positive my converted GPA will be around there), and my school is a magnet school and teaches very rigorous classes

rank : our school doesn't rank

APs : none(didn't even know their existence until...like...Feb..lol)

ECs : 4 yrs class representative
captain of the english drama club - won the best club of the year
member of the school guidance council(Seun-do-bu)(group of 10 exemplary students of the school)
starting member of our basketball team during a match with an american army high school
tae-kwon-do 3rd degree black belt
a handful of leadership camps..
representative of school for the Asian Games Host City Allied Youth Camp
1st place in school english speaking contest
other insignificant awards...

voluntary work : around 100hrs

work ex : none (my school has a dorm, where all students without contageous disease have to live in, and the school hardly ever permits anyone to go outside except on weekends)

recommendations : dazzling, i think the teachers love me ;-)

app essays : writing skills will be pretty average, but the ideas will definitely be creative

thanks in advance for reading and i hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!:-)

P.S. i'm planning to major in biology... if there's any other university that anyone wants to suggest, please feel free to tell me, cuz as i said in the beginning, i'm still learning and desperate ;-(

You have excellent test scores and grades, plus some nice EC's for an "800 Math2c" kid. Your English is also very good - did you live in the USA as a child? What state, if any, would be considered your home state?

When you present your credentials, it's helpful to edit and organize so that the reader can grasp who you are without much trouble. List your class council and school representative positions together, so there is a sense of progress. Put athletic achievements together, and drop the less significant ones. Explain more about your volunteer work, since the things you are willing to do for free help define you.

In terms of chances, most of the schools you mention are highly competitive. Purdue is easiest; UIUC and U Wisconsin are also solid matches. These are also the least expensive schools on your list. However, the state schools fill up quickly and the longer you wait to apply, the lower your chance of admittance. Have you applied to any schools yet? UM has rolling admissions; UIUC has a priority deadline of November 15th. If you are sure about these schools, you need to move to the next phase, pull together a list of deadlines and make sure your applications and other materials are sent as soon as possible.

Yes, being an American citizen will help, at least with obtaining financial aid. You could check into University of Rochester.

thanx for ur great advice midwesterner:-) i really appreciate it.
and thanx OneMom, i just checked into U of Rochester and put it on my list(which is still incomplete. i'm still open for more suggestions~~~~!!)

any other inputs????

Since everybody seems so shy, i'll start first, and then anyone can just say they agree/disagree. how about that?:-)

Duke - reach
Cornell - reach
JHU - reach
Vanderbilt - match/slight reach
USC - match
UNC - match
UIUC - match/safety
UVA - match/slight reach
UMich - Ann Arbor - match
UWisconsin - Madison - match
Purdue - safety

Voila!!

bump it like it's hoooooooooooot
