Comm 103

I got a low pass on the comp exam and the grader "strongly recommended" that I take comm 103. I got an 800 and 790 on the english sat sections and a 5 on the lit ap, so my writing must have gotten much worse over the summer (or I just suck at college writing?). Is it worth it to take comm 103 if I don't absolutely have to?

O-Week starts in two days. Wait until you’re at Rice, where you’ll have a lot of time for academic planning before registration.

Wooooo, fellow low-passer. I’m just going to take a(n) English/Lit class because I actually enjoy those things =]

I got a low pass too. It made me so mad because I worked my butt off haha. But I’m in the same boat as you in that I’ve always done best in English classes, got a 5 on the AP Lit exam and scored high on the Verbal and Writing portions of the SAT. I don’t really know what to do.

hmm what’s the passing rate?
and, if I am not mistakening, the course is a full-year course right?
i might just take it simply because I heard the class is very useful and…“fun?”

if you receive an LP
can you choose not to take the class? or are you pretty much required to take it just like those who received NS

@ Sima Yi: If you got a LP, you can choose not to take the class. It is just not recommended that you do that.

Be happy you got a low pass — it means you put in just the right amount of effort to not have to take COMM 103.

My son, now a junior, also got a low pass and was conflicted over whether to take COMM 103. He decided to wait until after his first semester to see how he did on papers. He’s a humanities kid and had to write a LOT of papers. I wasn’t too sure this was a good idea and I recommended that he go ahead and take the course - it couldn’t hurt! He ignored his mom, of course, but fortunately, his professors were pleased with his writing abilities and he never looked back. I’m not necessarily recommending this solution to the OP, but it worked for him.

Well I’m glad I’m not alone as a low passer.
Full year course?! oh hell no! I need room for my maths

AND it doesn’t get you D1 distribution credit! Is this correct?

Yes, it doesn’t get you D1 credit. If I were you, I wouldn’t take that course. It’s a huge waste of time. I low passed the comp exam when I took it back in the day and didn’t think twice about not taking it. I’m a junior biochemistry major currently and have taken either a 300 level or a 400 level english class every semester since freshman year (for fun) and have aced every single one. I didn’t feel that I needed a “strong recommendation” from the comp exam to dictate whether or not I was fit to take upper level writing courses. Use that time block to fulfill a distribution requirement or to take a class that you would actually enjoy.

Wow. I got a low pass too and it really cut me down a notch. I feel like I got completely taken apart and that my writing’s not up to snuff. I’m still debating whether I should take it.

DS got a LP and didn’t take the class. No prob.

Well, considering how I am gonna study engineering stuff.
Nah, screw it lolz no more English for me. Language Arts is too torturous.

Thank you all for giving/sharing such informative answers =D
