Commanders Palace

In my continuing role as a fountain of information for visiting parents, had to share my first time at Commander's Palace.

Oh, my goodness, it was wonderful!

Started with seafood gumbo. I had had the turtle soup at a school gala before, so wanted something different. Gumbo was wonderful, but get the turtle soup with the sherry if you've never had it.

Appetizer, some kind of crab and fish cake, that was absolutely fantastic. Can't find it on the online menu, but it was a seafood cake.

Entree was a seafood dish under glass. This was amazing, like something on the food network. It looked like a seafood stew and was in a plastic wrap, like the old time boil in bag meals. I was confused. The waiter explained that it was a silicon wrap, thus the glass, and it wrapped all the seasonings and seafood to give the utmost flavor. The popcorn rice was wonderful and spooned into it. After eating out of the silicon wrap, I asked if I could remove it, which they took it immediately from me, and added more rice, so it was like a wonderful aromatic stew. Just heavenly.

Got the bread pudding souffle for dessert, and they poured whisky rum sauce over it. Very light, very different from most bread puddings. Very good. The other ladies at my table got the molten chocolate cake, and the presentation was out of the food channel. Beautiful small chocolate cake, with powder, then a sprig of mint I think on top, beautiful chocolate decoration on the plate.

Also at lunch, 25 cent martinis. I got a blue one first, very delicious, then a pink one, which was supposed to have cranberry juice in it, which I like, but it was not as good as the blue one.

Service was excellent, valet parking was prompt.

If you only have time for one restaurant during a school visit, would highly recommend this one. It's a couple of blocks off Saint Charles, on either Louisiana or Washington, intersecting the 2800 block of Saint Charles. Jackets required in the evening. Reservations needed as well.

Hope y'all get to sample some of our excellent food when you come to visit Tulane.

Heartily concur with Montegut, the food, service and overall experience virtually never fails to impress. It is indeed on Washington and Coliseum, 2 blocks off St. Charles. So those of you that want to take the streetcar, don’t hesitate to do that. Rental car or taxi not required if you are staying close to the streetcar line. The Jazz Brunch on Saturday and Sunday is quite popular also.

As an interesting bit of trivia, both Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse were executive chefs at Commander’s before launching their subsequent famous careers.

Thanks, fc, for the trivia.

And second the streetcar tip.

I’ve said it many times before, take the streetcar up and down Saint Charles. You’ll love the relaxing tour of the beautiful homes.

A happy New Year to all of you and safe travels to all families visiting their colleges in the coming months.

The Creme Brulee is also unbelievable! It is served with a sugary Flor di Lei on top!

That’s Fleur de Lis! We actually have a picture of one of our classmates holding her Creme Brulee on our reunion website. I will definitely get that next time! Promised my husband I would take him once the nest is empty.
