I don't know what my chances are of getting an answer since most of the discussions here seem to be about admissions or incoming students but I will give it a try. Does anyone know what the typical dress is for commencement? I don't usually worry about such things but my husband is driving me crazy.

Hello!

Most people dress nicely, but not over-the-top formal. For men, khakis are fine; women wear nicer sundresses.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Taylor. My husband is planning to wear a blazer and take a tie. I told him to wait until he knows what the weather will be. I can plan something for me that will look either somewhat dressy or somewhat casual so I am not worried. We are older parents, so tend to be more formal.

You’re welcome! Congrats to your son/daughter! :)

@lotsofquests Try looking at previous graduation videos for Lafayette on YouTube. Great way to see what people actually wore and then adjust for the weather. Congratulations on the upcoming graduation!

Thanks, CinMom. I never thought of looking for videos. I don’t tend to fret over such things but my husband asked me and just yesterday one of our guests asked me, so I guess that I had better check it

It must have been cold and windy last year; most were wearing coats. I still got a pretty good idea of what to wear. I hope the weather is nicer this year.

Now I have another question, Taylor, if you happen to read this. I only watched the processional and the first few minutes but it looked like the parents/guests were standing. Is there seating?

I hope you had as nice a time at this year’s commencement as we did when D1 graduated two years ago. That was just before the quad renovation got underway and we had perfect seats under the same tree that we sat under as we watched the Class of 2012 welcomed to campus on a sunny August day in 2008.

lotsofquests,

My apologies, I just read your question- I hope you enjoyed the ceremony!! :)

Taylor

Thanks, Taylor, for your help. I forgot that I asked about seating after I found the answer in one of the college newsletters.

Graduation weekend was just about perfect. All of our guests made the trip safely. We had a wonderful Friday night dinner at the Chowderhouse, a restaurant that we had wanted to try for 3 years. We got centralized parking early in the day and were able to walk everywhere easily. We had good seats for Baccalaureate which helped us to decide to sit way in the back, under a tree, for the actual graduation. The president’s reception was lovely and gave the guys time to organize their house for the barbecue. Although rain threatened, it never came. We said a very bittersweet goodby to Lafayette after a great four years.
