Has anyone received notification yet if they are commended for the PSAT? I know I'm commended for sure, because my score is above a 200.

This past spring your counselor should have given you a letter that allowed you to choose 2 colleges to send your information to. If you didn't get the letter, you are still commended.

I would recommend talking to your counselor.

According to the National Merit site, commended students are notified in late September of their status. Only those who made NMSF are "officially" notified by mid-September.

hey, dvu, i think this is about semifinalists, and not commended students. the psat is in october, scores come around december or january, and then commended students are notified and get to send their information to two colleges in the spring. then, almost a year after the psat, in september, semifinalists are notified.

if you are commended, you should have heard a long time ago. even if your counselor didnt give you your letter, you are still commended. but the deadline to send your information to colleges has passed, so you wont get to do that. but you can still write it on your applications and everything. so yeah, go talk to your counselor. if he doesnt know, try the principal. thats who had my letter.

This is what I read on the NM official site regarding Commended Students:

"In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship® awards, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses."

oh I got the letter in spring but I thought we would be getting an official letter of commendation in september. cause the kids at our school who made semi got their semifinalist stuff already.

but the psat isnt even until october. maybe you get a letter that you can send to colleges to show that you are commended in september. i havent received anything like that. but i definitely knew i was commended before this month. i found out in the spring.

Both commended and semi are notified in the spring of junior year. However, you don't know which of the two categories you fall under until the semi's are officially notified that they made semi in september.

I was under the impression that those that are commended receive official notice in late September of senior year, a few weeks after semi's are announced.

oh, so do you mean in september, that semifinalists are notified that they are semifinalists, and commended people are notified that they arent semifinalists, and are only commended? that makes sense.

Not sure if they're officially told that they're "not semifinalists", but they're definitely informed that they made commended.

I'd wager to guess (on the basis of knowing nothing much about last years time table for commended notification), that commended will not be notified until about a week or two after the semi's have been released to the press, which occurs on sept. 12.

The top 50,000 scorers are notified in the spring with the pick two colleges paper. In early september the top 16,000 (out of the top 50,000) are notified they have reached semi-finalist level. A few weeks later, those who didn't reach semi-finalist are informed that they are commended.
