Commercial Banking

Does anyone know what commercial banking is like or have any information in general about it especially regarding:

-Type of work
-Whether or not it's quantitative
-How hard it is to break in
-Career path/compensation

thanks

Commercial Banking is a very broad term. There are basically two main aspects:

-private savings accounts and such.
-Corporate finance.

Needless to say, the latter is a tad more difficult to break into (but much easier than IBanking).

What Corporate finance really is: It’s how commercial banks like ScotiaBank, Barclays, Citibank(Cbank section) give facilities(loans) to big private firms in order to help them finance themselves. The credit office is in charge of this type of thing; What the credit office does is it reviews a company’s balance sheets, history, cash in-flows and out-flows and basically tries to analyze whether the company is worthy of taking a loan or not. Corporate finance involves trying to “convice” the head office to give the company the necessary funds.

It does require some quantitative skills when you come to look at balance sheets and cash flows.

Dont know much about career path, but the credit office is on top but thats all I know because I interned for a bank. The compensation is supposedly okay but not very much up to Ibanking standards.

Hope I helped clarify things.
