Commitment Deposit: Campus Housing Priority, Missions A

Hello everyone!

On the USD website I noticed it says to make commitment deposits as early as possible to secure campus housing priority. One of the main things I loved about USD was the Missions A single room suites since I loved the option to have privacy or go to the living room area where others may be. How difficult is it to secure a room in one of these suites? How early do you think I need to commit to get one? I'm still waiting on the financial offer from UC Irvine and am making some final decisions.

Also, I was accepted into the honors program at USD. I'm not entirely sure how the Honors LLC works. Can I be a part of it and still live in a Missions A suite?

I'm deciding between USD (Honors Program), UCI (CHP), and UC Davis (no honors). I've been leaning towards USD for a while, but I don't want to commit with $500 and regret it because I didn't take the time to weigh my choices. On the other hand, I don't want to spend too long waiting for the UCI financial package or weighing my choices and then not be able to secure housing in a USD single room suite since that was a big draw to the school for me personally. Thank you for any input!

I’m in pretty much the exact situation as you! I really wanted to live in Maher when I first visited the school. I was accepted into the Honors LLC as well, and from all that I’ve gathered I think we live with our LLCs in whatever dorm they are living in, but I can’t find any information about where that is or how that works. It looks like no matter which LLC you live in, you live with that LLC, which makes it seem like no one chooses their freshman housing because everyone has to be in an LLC. I guess this is a good question to ask at a campus visit because I don’t know who we’d email about this. I feel like it would make sense to put honors kids in the suites…hopefully…

My 2 sons are currently in the Honors Program at USD (Freshman & Sophomore). For the last 2 years, the Honors Freshman Dorm has been in Missions B down in the Valley (San Juan), but it may not have been decided as yet for the upcoming academic year. I know some of the rooms in San Juan are singles, but I don’t know how many. I know we didn’t commit until at least mid-April after the Honors overnighter (which my Freshman highly recommends!!), so you have some time. The Honors program is wonderful, with highly motivated students from all over the country, excellent professors teaching the Honors classes, and priority registration for Honors students as well. Freshman are even given research opportunities which is unheard of for Frosh undergraduates at larger universities. USD is also now offering a 2nd year Honors LLC housing opportunity beginning next year.
Good luck in your decision, but you can’t go wrong with the USD Honors program in my humble opinion!!

@TORERODAD Do your sons like living in Missions B with other Honors Students?

I’m so glad to see some questions and responses :). We posted an earlier response in regards to Choral Scholars/music ensemble but haven’t received feedback as of yet. Although my son hasn’t officially committed as of yet, he is leaning towards USD. I thought I read somewhere that the housing form comes out in mid April, but not certain. @torerodad It must be nice to have two kids in the same school :). Are your sons happy there are they enjoying it.

The Honors LLC dorm has been an awesome experience for both of them. Since you are surrounded with arguably the brightest group of incoming students, they form tight bonds with highly motivated, academically driven students early on and naturally, your closest friends often tend to be those students you live with your Freshman year. They develop a strong foundation for academic success because their peer group are all high-achievers as well. Many of the kids choose the USD Honors program because the 4 year merit scholarships puts the cost of education on par with (or even lower than) “high ranked” publics (CAL, UCLA etc) and privates as well (USC.). The personal attention the students get at USD in very small classes, from amazing faculty who truly want to teach undergraduates is the very reason my sons turned down admission offers from all 3 of these named universities and do not regret their decision one bit. Of course attending school in beautiful San Diego is a perk too!

That was incredibly helpful! I’m going to the overnight and now I’m super excited! Thank you!

Thank you for all the input! Sadly I won’t be able to attend the Honors over-night program. Housing with others who have the same amount of academic motivation as me sounds cool, but I do really hope I could somehow get in the Missions A suites since that right now it really one of my main reasons for wanting to go to USD. I know it’s not really a good reason but it’s just something that’s big for me personally that just resonates with me. It was definitely something that stood out apart from UC Davis and UC Irvine.

I emailed USD about this and this was their reply:

Congratulations on your admittance to USD! All of our freshman housing placements are made according to your LLC or living learning community, therefore it is not possible to request a certain room. However, you are able to list your preferences on the application in regards to room occupancy (single, double, triple, quad) and we will do our best to accommodate those preferences, but we cannot guarantee anything. Do keep in mind though, the priority for placement is determined by when the University receives your commitment deposit. In addition, please understand that singles are very limited in all of our housing areas.

In the LLCs students who share a common interest live and study together. Not only do LLCs ease your academic and social transition to USD, they expand your intellectual curiosity beyond the classroom, and establish an immediate sense of community with your faculty and fellow residents. In an LLC, students take classes together and live near one another, sharing a supercharged college experience where academics meld with exciting extracurricular activities and community engagement, unfurling new understandings in the process. Built around themes such as social justice or sustainability, each LLC provides a ripe environment for you and your peers to ponder differing perspectives and galvanize into action. Below is a link where you can explore the LLC webpage and find more information in regards to the various options available on our campus.

Does anyone know where intersections and social justice will be housing this year?
