My freshmen and sophomore year of high school I played football and did year round weightlifting through the football team at my school. After I stopped playing football I continued lifting. While I was filling out the CommonApp's Activities page my counselor advised me to try to think of all the things I do in an average week and include the one's that might stand out. Since I've been lifting for about 4 years I thought it was worth including, but since it isn't so important to me I put it at the bottom of the list. When I was looking for the activity title in the dropdown menu I saw JV/Varsity Weightlifting and decided that made the most sense. I selected that option, left the line asking for varsity letters or honors blank, said I participated for 4 years, and then in the details line I clarified that I participated in organized weightlifting in 9th and 10th grade and was independently lifting weights in 11th and 12th grade. I thought this made the most sense at the time. Since everyone at school finally finished the application process we were talking about our apps and the activities page. I listed off the activities I included and my friend said that he thought the weightlifting seemed very dishonest (our school doesn't have a weightlifting team, which I now realize the JV/Varsity was obviously referring to) and was a very big deal. I think I'm in the right, and even if I'm not that it's a very minor issue. Do I have anything to worry about or is my friend just making me paranoid?

I think the way you listed it is fine. The CA format forces you to list activities in a specific way, and your clarification of the fact that you did independent lifting in 11th & 12th is sufficient.
