Common App Activities Section -- Foreign Language/Educational Trips?

I spent spring break of 2016 on a school trip to Cuba, where we spent a lot of time learning about their unique culture, their history, and their relationship with the US. I am also a Spanish student so I was able to practice a lot of Spanish while I was there as well.

Over spring break 2017, I will be spending two weeks in Costa Rica and Nicaragua on a Spanish trip through my school. During one of those weeks, I will be living with a host family, so I will obviously be getting a lot of practice with my Spanish skills then!

I was wondering whether or not I should include these trips in the activities section of the Common App. I would like to continue taking Spanish courses in college and eventually working towards fluency.

Thank you for your feedback!

I’d say put it down. They’re sponsored by the school, not some random thing you’re doing to make it look like you’re a globally aware citizen (and having your parents pitch over $5000 in the process). Plus, since you have a passion for Spanish, it boosts your dedication. Have fun on your 2017 trip!

Yes, definitely put it. it goes in the “foreign exchange” section of the ECs.
