Can anyone tell me, if you are applying to a school for MT that uses the common app, how do you submit non-academic teacher recommendations (voice teacher, director)? The academic form is specifically for an academic teacher and I can't find another form or directions for sending other letters.

My D sent her artistic rec letters directly to the MT departments. Hope this helps.

For any college, arts or not, you can send in supplemental recommendations that are not academic teachers with NO form. These are not required recs but are good to send. They should not be from more academic teachers but from those who know the student in a different capacity and in the case of MT, from those in related aspects to MT. These can be written on that person’s own letterhead of that of their school or organization.

Thanks! In the case of a school like CMU where the common app info goes to the office of admissions, should the artistic recommendations be sent directly to the school of drama?

My kids, as well as advisees, have all their recs sent to admissions. There is not necessarily a right or wrong way. Their guidance counselor sent all recs in one package.

However, if a drama department specifically requires an artistic rec for that department, you’d have to give it to them. I’m talking about optional recs with no form.

By the way, you mention at CMU how the app goes to admissions…this is true at most schools. The admissions office handles applications and all the supporting materials. The audition handles things like the head shots and theater resumes at auditions.
