What is the difference between asian and asian america on the common app? Both of them have identical drop down menus. If they already know your city of birth why do they distinguish the two? Thanks for the help, and if you already submitted and you are asian can you please tell me which one you picked.

I picked Asian because I don't have American citizenship.

Asian American is someone who is born in America and has an American passport or, I think someone who has received the green card. But not so sure about that.

It's, I think, mainly for statistics they ask your race/ethnic origin.

Yea. What he said. So if you're Asian, and you're born here in America, then you're Asian American.

Or if you're a fob, I guess you're just an Asian.

fob? (Somehow I have an image of an English man. :confused: )

"...if you're Asian, and you're born here in America, then you're Asian American.

Or if you're a fob, I guess you're just an Asian."

yep.

FOB = Fresh Off the Boat

Thanks, firewalker.

By the way, syneria, it's "she". :)

i don't think i picked one, but i'm sure they know cause of my name and my birthcity is in beijing haha.

Asian Canadian, btw

If you pick Asian you'll be marked as an international.. not that you have any other choice if you are one (because you'll have to prove your citizenship if you lie). Admission is even harder for internationals..

Haha, sorry Izzy. My bad.

Hm. It's pretty impossible to get by with lying about your citizenship status, I think.

Unless you have black market connections... wiggling eyebrows

It doesn't seem like it is used to determine if you are an international because the Common App asks you for your citizenship, birth country, and current residence. I ended up checking Asian American since I was born and raised in cali =)

Now I remember that section..

Asian = Ethnicity
American = Nationality

i accidentally checked Asian , and not Asian-America?

is this a big mistake? should i bother contacting colleges to change it?

this is such a technical issue, haha
but if you have a greencard, are you considered Asian or Asian-American?

Checking Asian doesnt mean you are an international. You can be a permanent resident. As a permanent resident you are considered the same was as a citizen...tuition, admissions, scholarships, everything. Applying internationally is not harder, getting money out of it is harder. In fact I would think international is easier.

Green card = Asian
Citizenship = Asian american

with green card you are still a citizen of the country where you were born in.
