The prompt:
Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

Is this prompt referring to just a background story or can it be about and specific thing that happen to me?

I was planning to write about when I was 14 and I got stranded in an airport with my cousin after the 2010 earthquake damaged the only international airport in Chile (the country where I lived at the time) and we could not get back.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

The essay from prompt #1 must contain meaningful incite about you, and you can choose whatever context you have available to present the information. So your topic is fine as along as you can identify and develop the message that you want the readers to hear.

Its supposed to be a story about you where in between the lines the admission office learns about you. You tell them you are adventurous without saying it but showing it. You tell the admission officer you are passionate about this without directly saying it but showing it.

You want to write something about you that doesn’t already come through in other parts of the application. What happened during the event that brought something meaningful about you to light? Or did something happen that shifted your perspective about something? Any particular revelations during the event? Adcoms want an opportunity to see what makes you tick, to see who you are outside of the context of your GPA and other stats.

There are many good books out there on writing the essay, if you don’t want to buy one you can probably borrow some from your local library. Good luck and have fun with it!
