common app essay/short answer

For an activity that was important to me on the common app, I put weightlifting. For my personal statement, I am writing about an activity that is important to me. For that, I’m choosing weightlifting also. Do you think they’ll care that both the short answer and essay are on the same topic? I’m not going to be repetetive in them; my short answer focuses on how I decided to join and how it’s been a good experience, whereas my essay focuses on my developement as a student through weightlifting.

Do you think this is OK? I’m probably doing this for harvards.

That's fine. Isn't that the question, sort of? To expand? How long is your short answer though? Keep it under the word limit, around 150 words or so and you'll be just fine.

I was going to ask the same thing. I'm thinking of talking about marching band for both. Is it okay if I don't diversify? I could easily put church mission trips, or MUN, etc..

I think it's a good way to talk about multiple things if you have them, but it's perfectly fine to show dedication to one activity, as long as you don't repeat yourself too much.
