Can someone tell me whether my essay topic would be either too cliché or unrepresentative of my true personality? I plan on writing about soccer, but more about how I only like playing pickup and not competitive/league soccer for the common app essay about a place truly content.

Essays about sports are usually overdone and more often than not, do sound very cliche.
Then again, it also depends on execution. If you’re a great writer it could go well but it would still have the element of being cliche attached to it.

Maybe you should try brainstorming some other topics. You can pick something that’s seemingly small and blow it up into an amazing essay. Look at things you often overlook as well. If you can find absolutely nothing then I guess you’d have to stick with your topic. But I’m pretty sure you have something interesting going on in your life

Yeah that’s what I’ve heard a lot…should I try and write about something quirky/unusual?

If you can write a long essay about it and at the same time show your personality, you should.
