I have a question about who to fill in for Parent 2. My parents divorced in 2003 and in 2004 my bio dad moved to China (I live in the states). I live with my mom and my stepdad and I have minimal contact with my bio dad but we still stay in touch. I know there's an additional information section, but I'm not sure if it's even really worth it to put my bio dad there. And I already tried emailing the common app people but they gave me a generic answer that didn't help at all.

When you file the FAFSA, you will need to include the income information for both your mom and your stepdad because you are living with both of them. Your bio dad’s information is not reported on the FAFSA.

If you apply to a college or university that requires the CSS Profile, or that has its own financial aid form, you may be required to include information for your bio dad (the Non-Custodial Parent or NCP) as well. Some places that require financial information from the NCP will consider giving a waiver if you produce documentation that they consider demonstrates that you have no contact with your NCP. Since you still are in touch with him, your chances of getting that kind of waiver are just about zero.

So, sit your mom and stepdad down, and find out just exactly how they expect you to pay for your education. That will determine how deep and how far you will have to dig in order to find your safety schools.

Thanks for the advice! Anyone else?
