Common App Honor: Does the Greater Washington D.C. area count as regional, state, or national?

I competed in a tournament open to the “Greater Washington dc area” (includes va, wv, md, and dc). does this count as regional, state, or national? yes, competitors came from multiple states (3 plus DC) but calling it a national competition seems like an exaggeration (sounds like it would be from coast to coast), and i do not want to raise any red flags. advice? is there an official “level” (regional, state, national) for the Greater Washington D.C. area?

I would put regional.

More to the point - it’s just wrong. A New England competition or a metro NYC one are likewise regional. So in this case, I agree, it’s regional. National should be self-explanatory. And if there were a D.C. only honor, I would list it as state.

thank you!

@skieurope Thank you! Also, what do you mean “if there were a DC only honor, I would list it as state?”

An honor limited to residents of the District.

@skieurope all honors and awards were given indiscriminately towards competitors, regardless of location. does this mean I should list it as state? why would a DC only honor count towards state?

You misunderstood. In the situation you described, it’s regional. If there was ever a DC only compeititon, or you were named all-D.C.running back, that you would list under state, if the only options are state/regional/national. Or if the options are local/state/regional/national, you could list it under local.

Regardless, no need to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Pick the category you think fits best.
