Since I was in grade school, I have participated in storytelling events and won many awards for it. Though there were no more competitions to participate in once in middle school, i coninued to do it. I have played guitar for 8 years and often use it in conjunction with my lyrical storytelling. I also write poetry and participated at the Young Writer's Institute in Wash U. this summer, which is something I will evidently be listing on my EC list.

My question is, would writing about storytelling on the explain-one-ec bit on the common app be silly? I'm a Mexican Hispanic with Native American roots so I also maybe don't want to seem too stereotypical? lol...not that all people of my background are good at storytelling anyway. But my main point is that it may be a silly EC to focus on.

Feedback would deffinately be appreciated!

In my opinion the essay would be to general and won’t have enough flare. Think of your essay as a way to present who you are and what you are about. Storytelling may be who you are but perhaps there is one aspect you can focus on that will present you in a category of your own. What you have to remember is admissions looks at hundreds if not thousands of potentials, and if they read your essay and your number 1,020 you really have to stand out and have that certain something. I would do a bit more brainstorming and some up with at least five different topics then come back to the forums for more advice.

I totally agree with you. But I think that you think I meant that I was going to write about this for the common app essay. I’m only thinking of writing this for the short answer on a single ec. Thank you though!

I think you’d be able to do well with it, but try to make it as central as possible. By that I mean you shouldn’t introduce the topic of storytelling and then talk about guitar and creative writing too. Choose one and focus on that. You don’t have enough space to tie them all in and still have a central focus.

good point, CollegeOnThBrain

Its just that creative writing and guitar work together to form my storytelling performances! lol
But you’re right and I’ll try my best to just describe my experiences with storytelling

thank youuu : )
