I’m applying ED in a month and currently struggling with my Common App essay. I have a few drafts, but I’m not sure if my topic is “good enough” or shows enough of who I am. I don’t really have that big “ah-ha” moment or deep, impactful story that makes for a moving essay. I just have some hobbies – writing, viola, taking walks, etc. that I’m trying to incorporate but I don’t want to write an uninspired essay. (My essay is about the importance of walking and writing and how those two activities are linked for me). For those of you done with the essay or have already applied to college, what did you write your essay about? Was it a big singular moment/memory in your life, an important hobby, or something else? It’d be nice to hear some topics to maybe get inspired. If you have any other advice on writing the essay, please let me know as well. Thanks in advance!
Try to talk about one time where you walked and wrote, how it changed you. Tell it like you were doing it recently, try to be very descriptive… Write your essay as an anecdote.
Awesome advice from my ap lit teacher was to make an intentional and apparent (although not necessarily intuitive) connection between the beginning and end.
For example, if you make an allusion to music at the beginning of the essay, try to make a few analogies to music throughout the body, maybe use some words with a musical connotation when referring to something non-musical, and then wrap it up with references to music.
It should work with basically any topic - the more off the wall, generally, the better - like references to magic school bus in an essay about science - but just connect the beginning and end. That should make your essay more memorable and coherent.
I think your essay sounds pretty unique and could be good. I’m just writing about an EC and it’s meaning to me right now. No really aha moment and it’s pretty hard to convey a struggle without seeming like a weakling who complains. Writing about myself makes it so that I need to describe rather than say not enough words…
Any topic is good for Common App. You don’t need to be homeless to have something to write about. Many people just write about a daily experience, and those are just as meaningful. I like your idea, just run with it and see where it takes you. You can always go on the Essay forum for help.
“Luckily” for me, I had a pretty major experience in life that I’m talking about.
You could intertwine any childhood memories or hobbies to what you want to become. Ive basically written an essay on my Indian heritage and how it led me to become who I am today. You could go somewhere along those lines. Most importantly let someone who has no idea of what youre strenghts are, to read the essay. I gave mine to my British Lit teacher, (cuz he know nothing of Indian history), and Im good to go. All the best!
Sounds like it could be a good essay. Try it out. This is not an O Henry story where you need to have a surprise ending or an ‘ah ha’ moment. You just need to reflect on something that you do that says who you are, and why you care about it, and what it implies that you have to offer a community of which you are part. As a writer, I’m sure you can do it.
