Common App Question

I have this in pdf form. I sincerely hope that this "revolutionized" form actually allows you to type on it, and save it, but now I fear the worse. Please tell me we can do this.

There's a discussion about typing into the PDF here. Your best bet for typing and saving it, though, is just to make an account on the website.

Are most people gong to send it via online, or mail it instead? I just don't seem comfortable sending things online... it just seems so impersonal. Also, just out of pure curiosity, what will exactly prevent us from BSing half of it? My other schools require signitures on the bottom of most pages on the app. They are in charge of writing down ur gpa and class rank. The common app... just allows you to write down ur own rank and etc. Very odd?

And why is the paper based different than online? The paper requires an essay, but the online one doesn't? Confused 101.

Mr. S, Son who is in college now did almost all his apps on line. I worried about it, but many (or all?) colleges who accept online apps have passworded student accounts that keep updated information, so you can check and make sure the app was received.

The only college app that had a problem was the one that was sent snailmail. That college lost the app, then it got sent back to S all smudged and filthy. Not a good reflection on that school! S. decided not to resubmit the app.

What he did was: all the school bits -- teacher, counselor recs. etc. he printed out and the school sent paper copies. This took longer, but the colleges were very understanding about that.

The online app does include the supplement in cases where the college requires it, so don't forget! If you look through the common app site, you find a list of participating colleges, with links to their supplements.

My second S will need to familiarize himself with this, because none of his brother's prospective schools used the common app.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Hey what about GPA and Rank? I know the SATs get sent directly, but what about the other half of our academic record? Do we send like... a separate package with our transcript...? And what about the Essay that I saw on the paper based application? Is the essay only meant for the paper based...and not online?

Schools prefer on-line apps. because they just enter info from paper app. onto computer anyway, so it saves them a step. Some even waive fee for on-line apps. As AnudduhMom says, the Com. App. site indicates supplements and provides links to them.

S also did all apps. on line. Schools sent certified recs. with transcript and coun. rec. with transcript. Supplemental material (music CD's) was sent separately with Fine Arts Supplement form printed out and additional cover letter. (Another chance to make an impression!) He also included music teachers recs. in this package. Just a heads up: Williams supplemental materials are due 12/20 even though app. is due 1/1. Check college websites to make sure college does not have quirky rule like this. I just happened to notice this. Kids made fun of me for perusing websites anyway! The nerve! (LOL.) Happy outcome.

Both of my D's filed the common app online. The schools prefer online applications. It's easier and cheaper for them than dealing with and mail.

The only material that goes via snail mail is what mythmom listed.

Essays are also submitted online.
