Common App -- Recommender

Hi all

Just wondering what the recommender form looks like for ‘other recommenders’-- that is, not my teachers. If I’m asking a coach or an employer to recommend me, what kind of questions will they have to be answering? The same as my teachers?

Anyone have a picture even of what this would look like?

Thanks!

You don’t have to worry about giving your outsider recommender a template. You want CONTENT like this: http://mitadmissions.org/apply/prepare/writingrecs

i.e. memorable anecdotes.

I’m fairly sure there is no form, just a letter. (My H did an “other” rec letter and neither of us remember any form. )

So once I send the invite, the recommender will not have to answer any specific questions (like the teachers do) and just uploads their recommendation?

Yes. (Unless something has changed from last year)

alright great! many thanks! I only just realized it was possible to upload recommendations through the common app (was going to scan or mail them). In that case, can I just tell my recommender to copy- paste what they already gave me into the common app and they won’t have any additional things to fill out?

Yes. Add them and they will get an email with the request and instructions. They can then upload their letter. (I think it was an upload not cut and paste but that’s a minor point)

It is actually a simple process and all online.

Perfect! I cannot thank you enough! Couldn’t find any of this online.

Remember: just b/c the common app allows for up to 4(?) rec letters, colleges do NOT want more than what they ask for – the COmmon App is a tool. Most colleges want ZERO LoRs. Some one. A few ask for two.

on this site, someone wrote about someone who submitted 27 LoRs – the colleges were NOT impressed. Don’t be THAT kid.

Yes, don’t use an “other” recommender unless they can really add something that your teacher’s couldn’t.
