<p>Well it really used to be that as long as it fits in the space provided it would be fine, though I hear that the common app doesn't have a space so I think that the word limit might be a bit more strict, so yeah I would suggest not going too much over the limit.</p>
<p>And yes the limit is short, but sticking to the limit proves that you a concise writer, so yeah...</p>
